OnePlus 7 Pro Android 10 update brings video recording for wide-angle and telephoto cameras

Stable Android 10 was just launched two days ago for supported Pixel devices and the Essential phone. The updates were expected to come along on that date, so most readers were not really surprised when the stable update dropped. What did surprise a lot of us was Xiaomi releasing a stable Android 10 build with MIUI 10 for the Redmi K20 Pro, and then OnePlus providing the latest treat to owners of the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro as well through an Open Beta release. As it turns out, this update to the OnePlus 7 Pro not only brings over Android 10 but also brings over feature parity across the different cameras, allowing users to record video using the wide-angle and telephoto cameras.

Back when we visited OnePlus’s Camera Lab in Taiwan, one of the biggest requests from all the guests was that OnePlus brings over feature parity across the different rear cameras. The OnePlus Camera team commented at that point that some differentiation would be inherently present between the different lenses because of the functions they serve, but the team did agree with the general sentiment and they did have feature parity as one of their end goals. Similarly, the team was already internally testing video-recording functionality for the wide-angle lens camera, and the company planned to roll out the feature “later this year”. With Open Beta 1, the company dropped this off as a pleasant surprise for OnePlus 7 Pro owners.

As spotted by AndroidPolice, the camera app on the OxygenOS Open Beta 1 based on Android 10 for the OnePlus 7 Pro now features buttons for the wide-angle camera and the telephoto camera for video recording. Previously, one could click on the 1x button to get 3x zoom, but this did not utilize the telephoto camera in all instances. The screenshot shared by AndroidPolice mentions a Super Steady feature (top-right icon) being present for video recording on Android Pie, but I do not see it currently on my phone on Android Pie, so this also appears to be new (or a result of feature localization).

Further, this Android 10 build also brings feature parity for Nightscape and Portrait modes, to some extent. Nightscape mode now allows using the wide-angle camera, while Portrait mode can now use the telephoto camera. Other toggles and settings have been moved around to make room for these options.

If you would like to try out the new camera features, do note that sideloading the OnePlus Camera app onto an Android 9 Pie build of OxygenOS on the OnePlus 7 Pro will not enable all of these functionalities. You need to install the Android 10 based Open Beta for these features to work.
