Realme is advancing by leaps and bounds and has nestled very comfortably among the top five smartphone brands in India. The company has put out several quality products lately including the pocket-friendly Realme 3, the competent Realme 3 Pro, and the practical and premium Realme X. The company recently let us play around with a prototype of its upcoming 64MP smartphone at an event earlier this month where it also teased the then-upcoming launch of the Realme 5 series. Today, Realme is lifting the covers off the Realme 5 and the Realme 5 Pro and both the devices feature quad cameras on the back, stylish reflective crystal-inspired designs, and the commitment of a performance unfettered by their respective prices.
Realme 5 Pro
The Realme 5 Pro is a successor to Realme 3 Pro. The company says this naming is to indicate a total of five cameras on the series and not the perception of the number 4 as ominous in China. While the Realme 5 Pro is almost identical to the 3 Pro in terms of dimensions, it has a more striking and premium-looking design. The smartphone features a quad-camera setup on the back which comprises a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor, which we’d also seen on the Realme X, alongside an 8MP wide-angle camera and two 2MP sensors for macro photography and depth sensing. All the three cameras except the depth sensor support the company’s Chroma Boost feature for improved saturation.
Other changes in the Realme 5 Pro over the predecessor include a USB-C port, up to 8GB RAM, and UFS 2.1 storage technology instead of eMMC. Additionally, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 712 mobile platform which is supposed to bring a 10% performance improvement and a 35% graphics boost over the Snapdragon 710.
The Realme 5 Pro maintains the same battery along with 20W VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology, which uses a low voltage and high current charging to prevent heating while charging.
In terms of software, the 5 Pro runs OPPO’s ColorOS 6 which is based on Android 9 Pie. The smartphone might receive an update to RealmeOS, the company’s own custom Android skin, but we haven’t heard much about the OS yet.
Realme 5
Compared to the Pro, the Realme 5 feels like a bigger upgrade over the Realme 3. It also comes with quad cameras and there’s a massive 6.5-inch HD+ display. The smartphone features a Snapdragon 665 and supports up to 128GB of inbuilt storage. To ensure undeterred experience while playing multimedia or gaming, there’s a 5,000mAh battery.
The quad-camera setup includes a 12MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens, and the rest of the three sensors are same as the Pro variant. The smartphone also gets the 4K video recording at 30fps.

Update: Realme launches Realme Q in China
Realme has launched the Realme Q in China, a device that is essentially a rebrand of the Realme 5 Pro. The Realme Q is available for a price of CNY 998 (~$139) for the 4GB+64GB variant, CNY 1,198 (~$167) for the 6GB+64GB variant and CNY 1,498 (~$209) for the 8GB+128GB variant. The pricing is lower than the Indian variant, but that is to be expected and not really surprising. Sales for the phone begin from September 9, 2019, in China.
