Google Assistant has grown from being a software add-on to Google Allo, to eclipsing the messaging service and becoming a very powerful virtual assistant on mobile and smart home devices. Google has been putting in a lot of effort towards its virtual Assistant, and it certainly envisages this software occupying a pivotal post in the future of connected devices. The primary job of an assistant is to aid you in doing a task quicker than what you would have achieved by yourself. Google had added in the ability to read and respond to WhatsApp, Slack and Telegram messages to Google Assistant. Now, the company has announced that Assistant can now make audio and video calls through WhatsApp.
Previously, Google Assistant could read messages from WhatsApp, and the app would also prompt you to respond to them. You could also record and send voice notes in WhatsApp through Assistant. And now, you can also instruct Google Assistant to dial an audio or video call to a WhatsApp contact, without needing to pick up your phone. Simply saying “Hey Google, WhatsApp video John” should prompt Assistant to make a video call through WhatsApp.
Google’s announcement for the same is short and tucked away between other news, but this functionality should bring a lot of value to users who find it cumbersome navigating through their long contact lists to find their contact. WhatsApp has ballooned in popularity to become the primary mode of communication for a lot of people, and the ability to send messages and quickly make audio or video calls from the service comes in really handy in areas where Internet connectivity is cheap but SMS/voice calls are more expensive. This feature also appears to be limited to Android smartphones, since Assistant transfers the command over to the WhatsApp app, which is not available for smart speakers and displays.
