Honor 20 Series Rumor Roundup: Everything we know about Honor’s upcoming flagship!

The Honor 20 series is the upcoming flagship lineup from Honor. With the Honor 20, Honor is revisiting some of its earlier decisions taken on the successful Honor View20, while updating several of the key specifications to make sure that the device can stand its ground against recent as well as future flagships. Here is what we expect from the Honor 20 lineup!

Launch

The Honor 20 series is scheduled for launch on May 21, 2019, at an event in London, as officially announced by Honor themselves. The event teaser uses a formula that revolves around the digit “4”, which either is an indication to the number of devices to be launched at the event or a reference to the number of cameras found on the back of the top variant of the phone to be launched. We expect Honor to officially launch the Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro at the event—we are unsure of what a fourth device could be, in this context.

Design and Specifications

Most leaks involving these phones indicate that the design of the phones and several of their specifications shall be similar. The Honor 20 is expected to come with a 6.1″ display, while the Pro is expected to come with a bigger display. Since none of the leaked images showcase a fingerprint scanner on the front or back of the device(s), it is safe to assume that both may feature an in-display fingerprint scanner. The phones are also expected to come with a punch hole display, as was leaked previously.

Honor 20 Pro

The back of the devices is where things get interesting. For the Honor 20 Pro, the back of the device is expected to feature a regular camera, a periscope camera for optical zoom (similar to what we saw on the Huawei P30 Pro), an ultra-wide angle camera and a 3D Time of Flight sensor (similar to what we saw on the Honor View 20), as well as a LED flash. The branding on the leaked renders suggests plenty of AI features, while the teasers from Honor’s social media channels also hint towards improvements in night photography.

The rear camera setup on the Honor 20 is expected to be a point of difference, as the phone is widely expected to swap out the periscope, optical zoom camera out in favor of a more conventional telephoto shooter.

On the inside, both the devices are expected to feature the 7nm HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC, as seen on the Huawei P30 Pro. We can also expect a generous amount of RAM and storage on both the devices, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see 8GB RAM or more on the top-most variant. Much like the 20 Lite, both the devices are also expected to run on EMUI 9 and Android Pie.

What would set the Honor 20 and 20 Pro apart from Huawei’s P30 Series would be their pricing. While no reliable information is available in this regard with a specific focus on these devices, Honor devices have historically been cheaper alternatives against similar-specced Huawei counterparts. An aggressive pricing strategy on these devices, plus excellent low light photography, might just tilt the scales heavily in Honor’s favor.

Note: Huawei/Honor have stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloaders of their devices cannot be unlocked, which means that users cannot root or install custom ROMs.
