MediaTek unveils the Helio P65 chip with support for 48MP cameras, faster AI performance

MediaTek has always had a rocky reputation in the smartphone marketplace. After all, they’ve often been regarded as slower chipsets than their Snapdragon/Exynos equivalents. These devices have also had historically worse developer support than other devices due to a lack of kernel sources and documentation, although with Project Treble, ROMs for MediaTek phones are now not unheard of. But there is no denying that they remain as one of the biggest players in the SoC marketplace. What is normally the SoC option of choice for many different devices, often including knock-offs of devices like the iPhone XS and the Galaxy S9, is also used by big, worldwide-known brands from the likes of Xiaomi, Huawei, and even Samsung. Recently, they’ve taken a backseat to focus on mostly midrange SoCs, and while the new Helio P65 chipset provides that midrange experience, it also serves as an amazing improvement to its predecessor.

Possibly, the biggest improvement that may interest some users comes in the form of support for 48MP camera sensors. 48MP camera sensors have become increasingly popular as we’ve started seeing on devices such as the OnePlus 7, the OnePlus 7 Pro, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro, and many more devices (both midrange and high-end), and whether you think 48MP cameras are a marketing bluff or if they actually make a difference, it does allow for bigger, better cameras to come with new MediaTek phones.

The new MediaTek chipset also comes with up to 2X faster AI performance, according to MediaTek. The product page doesn’t make it immediately clear what they’ve done to improve this, though, but we’re guessing they’ve gone with a new, more capable NPU compared to its predecessor. MediaTek is also boasting about enhanced gaming with the new Arm G52-class GPU. Other improvements include a better CPU setup as well as a more accurate GNSS and positioning engine.

It’ll be a while before we start seeing this chipset on devices, though. But overall, it should serve as a decent enough midrange chip, and we can’t wait to know more about it.
