The Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL could cost $399/$479 in the US

In case you’re out of the loop, Google is launching midrange smartphones for the first time in their history, the Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL. Previously, Google smartphones (including both Google Pixel and Nexus phones alike) launched with flagship-grade specifications, so the sole fact of the existence of these devices is already noteworthy by itself. Not just that, but they also don’t seem to cut a lot of corners when compared to their bigger brothers, the Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL. In fact, they’re slated to be pretty similar in several ways while costing a fraction of what the flagships cost. Now, we have a rough idea of how much less they will cost.

Tech YouTube channel This is Tech Today uncovered some information about the 2 upcoming Pixel devices before their announcement, including the packaging and the price. If this information is to be believed, the Google Pixel 3a—the smaller of the 2 upcoming devices—would retail at roughly $399, exactly half the price of the regular Pixel 3’s starting price. The bigger Pixel 3a XL, however, is expected to start at $479, just $80 more than its smaller counterpart.

$400 might sound really far-fetched for such a midrange phone. After all, we’re talking about a device rumored to launch with a Snapdragon 670 processor, 4 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of storage. And yes, there are cheaper options: the Redmi Note 7 Pro, for example, brings a Snapdragon 675, more RAM and more storage for a considerably lower price point. However, the Pixel 3a’s appeal is that, aside from the specifications, it is very, very similar to the flagship Pixels. So much, in fact, that it’s rumored to launch with the same camera—the Pixel 3’s camera still remains among the best out there, even when compared to camera beasts like the Huawei P30 Pro, and at $399, it’ll easily be the best camera you can find.

Whether or not that makes the phone worth it at that price point is up to you, though. Keep in mind that pricing is a very difficult factor to predict, so take this with a pinch of salt. Google I/O 2019 is around the corner anyway. Are you excited for the Pixel 3a/3a XL? Let us know down in the comments.
