Realme U1 with MediaTek Helio P70 launched in India for ₹11,999

Realme is an emerging smartphone brand in India, with a focus on budget and early mid-range segments. Realme started off as an online-only sub-brand of OPPO, but then later on, became its own separate brand. Realme devices ar seen to undercut the competition on their price value, and hence, coming up as viable alternatives despite the infancy of the brand. To keep up the pressure, Realme has now launched the Realme U1, the first smartphone with MediaTek’s Helio P70 SoC, in India.

Realme U1 is the first smartphone in the company’s U series, which in-turn is the lineup that will be focused on photography. The rest of the company’s lineup includes the C series, the numbered series and the Pro series.

The Realme U1 is being touted as “India’s Selfie Pro”, mainly because of its front camera — a single 25MP Sony IMX576 sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and 1.8-micron pixels. There’s software features like an AI Beauty+ mode that is optimized for Indian complexions, a Smarter Groupie feature that provides customized beautification for multiple objects in a single photo, and a Backlight mode, which helps keep both the background and foreground focused even if there is bright backlighting. There is also an AI Face Unlock feature, which we presume is because it is trendy to prefix AI to every conventional feature.

On the back, the Realme U1 features a dual camera setup with a 13MP primary sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a 2MP secondary sensor with f/2.4 aperture. Realme is boasting of slo-mo video capability of up to 90fps, but did not specify the video resolution (which we guess will be at 720p), so we’re taking this claim with a pinch of skepticism.

For the rest of its specifications, the Realme U1 comes with a 6.3″ FHD+ LCD display with a waterdrop notch at the top. On the inside, the phone is powered by the octa-core MediaTek Helio P70 SoC clocked up to 2.1GHz. The phone comes in two combinations of RAM and storage options — 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. There’s also a dedicated microSD card slot, alongside dual SIM capabilities. The phone comes with a 3,500 mAh battery, and it houses a microUSB port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The device runs on Android 8.1 Oreo underneath Realme’s UX.

The Realme U1 starts at ₹11,999 ($170) for the 3GB/32GB variant and ₹14,499 ($205) for the 4GB/64GB variant. The device will be available in Black, Blue and Gold color options. The Realme U1 will be available exclusively via Amazon.in from December 5, 2018.
