Since Google News’ redesign announced back in May, the company has been working to make it even better over time. Even though the application was entirely revamped with a new UI and new features, Google hasn’t stopped there. A set of new data saving features are being rolled out globally which aim to save you bandwidth. What’s more, they’ll be enabled automatically – you won’t need to switch them on yourself. - When applicable, videos in the app will open in YouTube Go, ensuring that it’s delivered in a lightweight yet clear format. Videos won’t auto-play, saving precious data.
- Newscasts (previews of a story) will adapt to become more text-focused, saving you data.
- Images are compressed and can be fully loaded with just a tap. Videos and GIFs will also not auto-play. Plus, less data will be cached and saved on your device.
- Many articles can be saved for consuming in offline mode, easily downloaded over Wi-Fi for reading later.
These features aim not only to serve those with weaker or limited connections, but those using Android Go phones as well. Also for the likes of commuters who may be subject to a fluctuating data signal, offline caching and reduced bandwidth pages can be a godsend. Keeping up to date with the news is important, and Google aims to make sure it’s easily accessible to everyone. Regardless of your phone’s specifications or your current data connection.
