Download: Android 8.1 Oreo firmware for 2017 Verizon and AT&T Samsung Galaxy J7

Samsung has been doing a great job of keeping its lower-end devices updated as of late. We’ve all heard about the carrier issues the company faces in the US though, which can delay updates from reaching unlocked devices well after their carrier-locked counterparts. It happened to the Samsung Galaxy S9, but interestingly, it appears to have happened in reverse to the Samsung Galaxy J7. Users on Verizon and AT&T have been waiting to see how long it would be until they get the update to Android 8.1 Oreo on their Samsung Galaxy J7. It’s finally out, and you can download Android 8.1 Oreo on the Samsung Galaxy J7 on both Verizon and AT&T.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy J7, hold your excitement for now, though. There are many variants released under that same moniker, and this only applies to the following build device model numbers. These have been uploaded and published thanks to XDA Recognised Developer/Recognised Contributor deadman96385.

  • SM-J727P
  • SM-J727V
  • SM-J727VPP
  • SM-J727A
  • SM-J727R4

The Samsung Galaxy S7 launched with Android 7.0 Nougat in 2017, and all of its updates so far have been based on that. As such, this is the first major upgrade that this particular smartphone has received. On top of all the new features that come with Android Oreo, such as picture-in-picture modenotification channelsbackground app optimizationsnotification snoozing, and more, there are also plenty of Samsung-specific changes with Samsung Experience 9.0. Nobody will really be all too surprised that it does not feature Project Treble support. You will get the August 2018 security patch, though.

deadman96385 notes that he has only tested the update on the SM-J727P, and to install Magisk you’ll need to format data after installation and then manually patch it via Magisk Manager. It’s very likely that the process will be the same across other carrier variants.

If you want to install the update, you can check out the thread below. It features both full ROM downloads and 4 file ROM downloads – both of which can be used to install the update on your Samsung Galaxy J7. It’s a bit late considering we’ve already got Android Pie, but better late than never when it comes to software updates.
