[Update: Rolling Out] Google Fi app is testing a dark theme for Android 10

Update (10/1/19 @ 1:50 PM ET): The Google Fi Android app now supports Android 10’s system-wide dark theme.

Earlier today, Google announced a new plan for its MVNO, Google Fi. The new Unlimited plan is similar in structure to plans you’ll find on other carriers, but the added benefits of Google One membership, intelligent roaming between Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular, and international coverage make this plan a really good deal. Before today’s update to the Fi app which brought the new Unlimited plan with it, we activated the in-development dark theme.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

In V19 of the Google Fi app, we spotted a new “App theme” preference that lets you manually enable the new Dark theme, force the standard Light theme, or stick to the system default. The system default follows the dark theme preference in Android 10 settings, which not all Google apps currently respect. The Dark theme itself is a dark shade of gray for the background with a lighter shade of gray for the bottom bar. The design itself is unchanged from the app’s current Material Theme design.

The latest version of the Google Fi app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. The current update enables signing up for the new Unlimited plan, but the dark theme is not accessible. I tested this dark theme on my Pixel 2 XL running the stable Android 10 release, but it’ll likely work on all Android 10 devices once it rolls out.

Update: Rolling Out

According to users on Reddit, Google is rolling out system-wide dark theme support for the Google Fi Android app. This works exactly as it does in other apps. You can select “System Default” in the theme settings. Then, if you have dark theme enabled in the Android settings, Google Fi will respect it and show the dark theme (or light theme if that’s your system choice).
