Google is preparing to launch its newest hardware at next month’s “Made by Google” event. Aside from the Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL, the newest phones by Google which have already leaked in an uncomfortably large amount of detail, we’re also getting to know some of Google’s other hardware ventures for this year. One of them is, as you may probably expect, a new Chrome OS-powered device. And from the looks of it, it seems that Google will be releasing a new laptop, possibly a successor to the original Pixelbook. Now, we’re getting to know the Pixelbook Go, which seems to be this year’s in-house Chrome OS offering.
The original Pixelbook, as well as the Pixel Slate, were powerhouses in their own right rather than simply Chromebooks you may find from manufacturers such as Samsung and ASUS, but the Pixelbook Go allegedly cuts down on most of the unnecessary fluff and gimmicks. It doesn’t have a fancy 36-degree hinge or 2-in-1 design. This is a simple clamshell laptop with a touchscreen–probably the reason why the device is called the “Pixelbook Go” instead of a Pixelbook 2. The device has actually leaked several times in the past under the “atlas” codename.
The Pixelbook Go will come in several options, topping at 256GB of storage, 16GB of RAM, and an Intel Core i7 processor, according to 9to5Google’s report. Other options will include the Intel Core m3 and i5, 8GB of RAM, and 64 and 128GB of storage–but it will pass on features like Pixelbook Pen compatibility to keep the experience more simple. In keeping with the Pixel name, it is said to be available in Just Black and Not Pink.
The laptop is allegedly built with portability in mind as well. It will be more subdued compared to its predecessor, and a magnesium alloy build will make the device just as light, if not lighter, than the Pixelbook. It will also have a 13.3-inch 16:9 display, and depending on the model, it will either have a Full HD or a 4K display. Unfortunately, not much is known about the device, but it’s just a matter of weeks before we get to know Google’s new products in full.
