Fossil’s Gen 5 smartwatches have the Snapdragon Wear 3100, 1GB RAM, speakers, and much more

Hot on the trails of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 2, Fossil has announced their newest Wear OS series. The Fossil Gen 5 smartwatches feature Qualcomm’s latest wearable chipset, 1GB of RAM, speakers, and improved battery life. Gen 5 is available in two body styles of the same size with a variety of watch band options for $295.

Like the Fossil Sport that was launched late last year, the Gen 5 series is one of the few that features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 3100 SoC. Even the newly launched TicWatch Pro 4G/LTE didn’t have Qualcomm’s latest chip. The performance improvements of the 3100 haven’t been as impressive as many hoped, but Fossil has included 1GB of RAM and new battery modes to help with that.

Fossil’s home-grown battery saving methods are called “Smart Battery Modes.” There are four different modes to choose from: Daily, Extended, Custom, and Time-Only. Daily mode is the default setting and it’s just the typical experience. Extended mode will turn off certain features to extend the battery life to “multiple days.” This includes things like the always-on display, Location, NFC, Wi-Fi, etc. The Custom mode is essentially the same thing, but users can decide which features are disabled. Lastly, Time-Only mode turns the smartwatch into a “dumb” watch with just a clock. This mode is automatically enabled when the battery reaches low levels.

Most Wear OS devices have 512MB of RAM, but lately, we’ve been seeing 1GB. This makes a pretty big difference in performance as well, which should further help the Gen 5 series. Performance has been an issue with Wear OS for a long time and it feels like Fossil is tired of waiting for Google to fix it.

There are six possible variations of the Gen 5 smartwatches. The “Carlyle” style is a minimal look that comes in “Smoke,” Black, and Black/Brown. “Juliana” has a little more embellishment with stones around the bezel. It’s available in Rose Gold, Rose Gold/Black, and Rose Gold Blush. Both styles have the exact same specs, body dimensions, and they take 22mm bands. They are available right now for $295 from Fossil and Amazon (2).
