Gaming smartphones. While they may have seemed like gimmicks at first, they have already made a huge impact in the smartphone ecosystem. A phone like the OnePlus 7 Pro, just to name one, is an example of this: While it’s not technically a “gaming smartphone” as its marketing isn’t heavily mobile gaming oriented, the OnePlus 7 Pro takes some cues from gaming phones like its high refresh rate display, RAM Boost, and Fnatic mode. Of course, gaming smartphones themselves have also gotten better with time. The Razer Phone 2 and Black Shark 2 are two such examples, but there’s another incredibly-impressive gaming smartphone that has only recently been announced: the Nubia Red Magic 3.
The Red Magic 3 gaming smartphone was introduced to the public and launched in mainland China roughly over a month ago, but now it’s becoming available to the wider, international public. And it sure does look exciting.

The main highlight of this gaming smartphone that sets it apart from most other smartphones is its 90Hz AMOLED display. Other gaming devices that have featured displays with high refresh rates include the ASUS ROG Phone, which includes a similar 90Hz AMOLED panel, and both Razer Phones with their IGZO LCDs which cap at a mind-boggling 120Hz. Depending on who you ask, higher refresh rates can make an enormous difference, to the point they might spoil regular 60Hz refresh rates for you. And yes, it also does wonders for gaming – there’s a reason the best gaming monitors have refresh rates of up to 244Hz – as long as the game you’re playing supports framerates higher than 60 frames-per-second.
And of course, this is a gaming device in and out, something that becomes very clear right from the moment you open the box. The phone itself has the general, stealthy aesthetic that you’d come to expect from other gaming devices and even earlier Red Magic phones, further complemented by an RGB LED stripe in the back, which is also fully customizable by the user. There are also gaming-oriented features that may fall into the “niche” category, including a full-blown internal fan for keeping your device cool during intensive game sessions.
The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with up to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, providing plenty of horsepower for even the most demanding games out there. The phone’s camera needs are served by a 48MP single rear sensor and a 16MP front camera. The primary rear camera is the same Sony IMX 586 sensor we’ve seen on phones like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the ASUS ZenFone 6, and the Redmi Note 7 Pro. The 90Hz display has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio with no notch and very slim bezels on the top and bottom.
Availability
The Nubia Red Magic 3 is available online starting today through redmagic.gg in a number of North American and European countries, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. It’s also becoming available in other global markets outside of China, including Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Macao. It’s also set to launch in India around mid-June, but we don’t have an exact release date as of yet.
As for the price, the Red Magic 3 starts at $479 / €479 / £419 for the 8GB RAM / 128GB storage version and goes all the way up to €599 / $599 / £529 for the 12GB RAM / 256GB storage model. This effectively undercuts the price of some of its most direct competitors, including the recently-launched OnePlus 7 Pro and the ASUS ZenFone 6, and if you’re a gamer, this might serve as a better overall package.
