For the past few months, the once-great Taiwanese smartphone brand HTC has struggled to convince us that it’s still relevant. After Google acquired 2,000 of HTC’s smartphone engineers and Valve moved ahead with its new own Index VR system, it doesn’t look like there’s much left for HTC to do. The company recently shifted its focus toward its 5G hub and “blockchain” phones, a strategy which is surprisingly working out for them given its most recent financial results. With a pair of promising new mid-range smartphones on the way, HTC may be making a comeback. Still, it’s important for HTC to not forget its commitment to keeping its existing products updated. The company has mostly kept its software upgrade promise, though it’s taken them much longer to roll out the Android 9 Pie update when compared to its competitors. After rolling out Android Pie for the HTC U11 and HTC U12+, HTC is now following up with a software upgrade for the HTC U11+.
The U11+ launched in late 2017 with a 6″ Super LCD panel and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 on top of Android 8.0 Oreo with Sense UI. 20 months after launch, the phone is finally getting its first major Android platform upgrade in Android 9 Pie. Twitter user @sardroid and XDA Member gortys both received the update for the Taiwanese model. The version number is 2.15.709.1 and arrives in a 1.45GB OTA update. The only notable change that’s mentioned in the changelog is the removal of Google+ as a source in BlinkFeed.

HTC typically rolls out Android updates first in Taiwan since that’s its home market. We don’t know when the update will be rolled out internationally. Given that the update has yet to roll out internationally for either the HTC U11 or HTC U12+, you’ll likely have to wait a few weeks to get the update on your non-Taiwanese model.
