It’s difficult to believe that it has been over 4 years since the NVIDIA Shield Android TV set-top box was released. It was the most powerful Android TV box available at launch and many still consider it to be the best option available today. Earlier this year we got wind of NVIDIA working on a new controller and remote for its NVIDIA Shield product line. What are new peripherals without a new set-top box? We had reason to believe a refreshed version of the NVIDIA Shield Android TV was coming and now it has been certified by the FCC.
NVIDIA really did release a great Android TV experience with its set-top box and it has stood the test of time. The SHIELD TV’s Tegra X1 SoC has done NVIDIA quite well, but many will agree that a refreshed chip is long overdue. A refreshed NVIDIA Shield tablet was rumored for a while with those mainly highlighting a newer version of the X1 chipset. Whether or not those rumors were true back then, we found some clues just last month that shed some light on the unannounced set-top box.

Now, along with the details we found about it running on top of Linux kernel 4.14 with the t210b01 SoC, an FCC ID listing for a “P3430 SHIELD Android TV Game Console” makes us believe that NVIDIA is getting really close to making an announcement. There isn’t much to see here in the listing though as it has been marked as “NVIDIA Proprietary and Confidential,” but we are given the following information.
Model: P3430
FCC ID: VOB-P3430
IC: 7361A-P3430
The document was created on the 16th of this month, submitted to the FCC yesterday, and then made available to the public today. NVIDIA has a lot of choices when it comes to when they choose to launch the device. The company knows that Google and it’s new competitor to GeForce Now, Stadia, is going to be launched later this year. The company could try to get out ahead of Stadia’s headlines and release it before. Or they could wait until the holiday season to make it official.
We’ll just have to wait and see if we hear more about this new set-top box in the near future.
Thanks for the tip GFunk!
