A prototype of an unreleased Nokia Android phone shows up on eBay

Nokia is a company that has seen quite a lot of challenges since its founding. There was a time when they were considered one of the most innovative mobile phone companies, but after its smartphone business was acquired by Microsoft, the brand nearly fell off the map thanks to the failure of Windows Phone. Although, they didn’t only try to stick to Windows Phone, as they dabbled in other mobile operating systems before. A result of one of those experiments surfaced on the Internet today as a seller on eBay listed Nokia’s old prototype Android phone up for auction.

The device goes by the name of the Nokia Ion Mini. Looking at the pictures, it’s obvious that the device is so small that it can easily fit in the palm of the hand. The seller doesn’t mention the exact screen size and we don’t know the pixel density either, but it would be fair to say that the Ion Mini is about 3-inches wide. The screen resolution is 480×800. According to the seller, the device was made between 2013 and 2014. What’s interesting is that it runs Android 4.3. The phone runs Nokia’s Z Launcher and some Google apps like Chrome, but the Play Store is nowhere to be found, most likely because it never passed the certification process.

Based on the specifications, the Nokia Ion Mini was aimed at users with minimal needs. The device has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 system-on-chip clocked at 1.2GHz and only 1 GB of RAM. The internal storage size is just 8 GB. This was a typical budget configuration back in 2013.

The seller mentions that the device is unlocked, so it can be used with any carrier. All of the basic connectivity like WiFi, 3G, and calling still work. You can also test the camera capabilities. To be honest, the Nokia Ion Mini looks like a polished and nearly finished product. You can buy this exact prototype for $1,999 from the seller on eBay. I don’t suggest you spend that amount of money for a 6-year old half-functioning prototype unless you’re a collector with a lot of money to spare.
