[Update: Unlocked model] The LG V40 is finally getting Android Pie

Update 3 (6/26/19 @ 9:25 AM ET): The unlocked LG V40 is now finally getting the Android Pie update as well.

Update 2 (6/19/19 @ 10:20 AM ET): The Android Pie update is now rolling out to the LG V40 ThinQ in Europe.

Update 1 (6/11/19 @ 10:50 AM ET): The LG V40 ThinQ is now receiving Android Pie on AT&T.

Anyone paying attention to the business side of the Android industry knows what shape LG is in. For those who are unaware, its mobile division has been losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year. The only reason why LG is able to continue manufacturing smartphones is thanks to the profits from its display (TV) and appliance divisions. This has been happening for years so many have given up on the company and its promises. This includes the false promises they made about swift software updates last year thanks to its Software Upgrade Center. The Verizon LG V40 ThinQ is just now getting the Android Pie update.

LG has a very shady history when it comes to the promises they make to their customers. Many LG customers are unable to get their broken smartphone replaced even though it’s currently under a warranty. The South Korean tech company said they would support the new module system of the LG G5 for 3 generations of smartphones. That turned out to be a lie too, as did their promise to start taking software updates seriously with the launch of the new Software Upgrade Center.

Getting major upgrades to the public by major OEMs seems to be an end of the year thing. No matter how early Google works with the likes of Huawei, LG, Samsung, and others, their official stable upgrade tends to come at the end of that year. In most cases, that’s usually only for one smartphone too (the OEM’s latest flagship) but we’re almost into H2 of 2019 and LG has only now been able to get its first Android Pie upgrade into the United States. Those who own South Korean versions of LG phones get these updates faster, but I wouldn’t even describe those as fast updates either.

In any case, if you currently own the Verizon Wireless version of the LG V40, then they have said the update to Android Pie is going to begin rolling out today. Most of the changes included in the update are what we’ve come to know from Android Pie’s new feature,s but this update will also bring Android’s April 2019 security patches as well.

Update 1: AT&T

AT&T is now rolling out the Android Pie update to the LG V40 as well. Like Verizon, AT&T’s update includes the April 2019 security patches, which it already received on Android Oreo. The update comes in at 1.48GB in size and with build number PKQ1.190202.001. Look for the OTA update over the next few days.

The update is rolling out in Norway, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, and Poland. This update comes with build number V405EBW20A_00 and it includes the slightly outdated May 2019 security patches.
