The Huawei Nova 5 Pro, Nova 5, Nova 5i, and MediaPad M6 launched in China

Huawei Nova series traditionally includes an affordable flagship device along with a much affordable ‘i’ variant suited for the buyers in the mid-range segment. While the second and the third generations of the Nova series devices arrived with a gap of almost a year after their predecessor, the Huawei Nova 4 was released only half a year after the Nova 3 series. Now, six months later, Huawei is rolling launching the next-gen Nove 5 series with a slight twist in terms of the naming. At an event in China, Huawei has announced Huawei Nova 5 Pro, the Huawei Nova 5, and the Nova 5i along with the two different models of the MediaPad M6. Additionally, there are some exciting accessories to go with them.

Huawei Nova 5 and Huawei Nova 5 Pro

The Huawei Nova 5 and the Huawei Nova 5 Pro are identical in almost all senses and the only difference is in terms of the onboard chipset. The two smartphones come outfitted with a 6.39-inch AMOLED displays with U-shaped notched identical to the Huawei P30 Pro. The AMOLED display is also stocked with an in-display fingerprint scanner. Unlike the P30 Pro, however, the upper half of the display on these devices does not vibrate to emulate the earpiece and we can spot a thin earpiece grille above the notch on both.

The Nova 5 and the Nova 5 Pro feature reflective back panels which scatter the incident light to give off a 3D holographic effect. The peppy colors, which appear to be inspired by soda or candy are set to grab a lot of attention. The smartphones have a slim profile which adds on to the appealing looks. Besides the exciting designs, there are options for some funky-looking covers to choose from.

Under the hood, the Huawei Nova 5 Pro features a HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC, which is Huawei’s flagship chipset. The chipset is complemented by 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. The Nova 5, on the other hand, comes with the all-new HiSilicon Kirin 810 SoC. The Kirin 810 is a successor to the Kirin 710 SoC and features two Cortex A76 cores clocked at 2.27GHz along with six Cortex A55 cores at 1.55GHz. Additionally, the chipset sports an NPU for AI-related tasks. The smartphones also support GPU Turbo 3.0 and on top of that, Huawei also announced a Joy Con-style controller which can be attached to the smartphone for intensive gameplay experience.

Both – the Huawei Nova 5 and the Nova 5 Pro feature quad cameras on the back, in an orientation similar to the Honor 20 Pro. The setup includes a 48MP primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture lens, a 16MP ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. The primary sensor comes with AI-backed stabilization along with Huawei’s standard filters for live effects while capturing videos. There’s a 32MP selfie camera on the front of the two smartphones with and an f/2.0 aperture. Huawei claims that the camera outperforms its competitors by offering more light in dim-lit conditions.

In terms of battery, the Huawei Nova 5 Pro get a 3500mAh battery with support for superfast charging at 40W. This allows the smartphone to get 50% charge in just 15 minutes and 85% charge in 30 minutes, as per the company’s claims.

The smartphone runs on Huawei’s custom overlay, EMUI 9.1, which is based on Android 9 Pie. Huawei is confident about providing Android Q updates to its smartphones in spite of the imminent Android ban, and if that comes through, we can also expect an update for the Nova 5 series.

Alongside the Huawei Nova 5 and the Nova 5 Pro, the company also revealed the Nova 5i with as a more affordable prospect. The smartphone comes with a 6.4-inch hole punch LCD display, HiSilicon Kirin 710 chipset, and quad cameras on the back. The setup on the back includes a 24MP primary sensor with an f/1.8 lens, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, there’s a 24MP camera with an aperture of f/2.0.

Along with the Kirin 710, the Huawei Nova 5i is equipped with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The smartphone runs on EMUI 9.1 and gets GPU Turbo 3.0 with it. For power backup, there’s a 4000mAh battery on the smartphone but there was no mention of fast-charging at the event.

At the event, Huawei also announced two different variants of the Huawei MediaPad M6. The two models vary in size, including a 10.8-inch model and an 8.4-inch variant. Both of these are powered by Kirin 980 chipsets with 4GB of RAM. The two variants are further branched into Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi+4G models. The two tablets also support GPU Turbo for an immersive and uninterrupted gaming experience.

Of the two, the 10.8-inch MediaPad M6 comes with some additional features. These include four speakers near all four corners, a 2K display, support for a keyboard dock, and for a Huawei M-Pen Lite stylus. The bigger tablet of the two also supports extended split screen option for better productivity.

The Huawei Nova 5 Pro gets two different variants – 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB – which are priced at CNY 2,999 (~$435) and CNY 3,399 (~$495), respectively. The pre-booking for the smartphone starts on June 21st i.e. today and it will be available starting June 28th. The smartphone also gets a special edition in collaboration with a Chinese artist and will be available for CNY 3799 (~$550) along with the general availability.

The Huawei Nova 5 comes in a single variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage and it is priced at CNY 2,799 (~$410). The smartphone goes up for pre-order on July 13th and will be available on July 20th.

The Huawei Nova 5i also has two variants – 6GB/128GB and 8GB/128GB – which will be sold for CNY 1999 (~$290) and CNY 2199 (~$320), respectively. The smartphone goes on pre-order and sale alongside the Huawei Nove 5 Pro.

huawei mediapad m6Coming to the MediaPad M6, the 4GB/64GB Wi-Fi variant of the 8.4-inch model comes for CNY 1,999 (~$290) whereas the 4G variant with the same configuration is priced at CNY 2,399 (~$350). The 4GB/128GB Wi-Fi variant is for CNY 2399(~$350) while the 4G variant will be priced at CNY 2,699 (~$390). It will be up for pre-orders on July 10th and available starting July 20th.

For the 10.8-inch model, the 4GB/64GB Wi-Fi variant is priced at CNY 2,299 (~$335) while the 4G variant will be available at CNY 2,699 (~$390). Likewise, the 4GB/128GB Wi-Fi-only variant comes for CNY 2,699 (~$390) and the 4GB/128GB 4G model will retail at CNY 3,499 (~$510). The bigger tablet goes on pre-order starting today and will sell July 10th onwards.

Lastly, the accessories released with these devices such as the 3W Mini Bluetooth speaker will be priced at CNY 199 (~$30), the TalkBand B5 Pro comes for CNY 999 (~$145), the Huawei FreeLace Bluetooth headset comes at CNY 499 (~$75), the Huawei FreeBuds for CNY 399 (~$60), and finally, the gaming controller for CNY 199 (~$30).
