Google has two navigation maps application under its belt. Google Maps is the company’s original maps service, while Waze was a company it acquired as it served different needs thanks to unique features. Over the years, we’ve seen Waze features make their way to Google Maps and vice versa. Q2 of this year has been great for fans of the Mountain View tech giant’s first mapping service and it looks as if that momentum isn’t stopping anytime soon. A number of people have noticed that the maps application will now show the speed you are traveling while you are in navigation mode.
We aren’t even a week into June and there have already been two new features for maps users. We talked about the other new feature earlier today as users in India are now seeing new public transit features in the app. May was a big month for the maps team as well with the addition of displaying popular dishes from restaurants, speed camera alerts, route previews, showing crowd-sourced menus for eating establishments, and even gave the developers some love with the release of the new Maps SDK beta for Android.
As the image shows above, you can now see your current speed (orange number) alongside the posted speed limit for the road. This doesn’t look like a feature that is available to everyone right now though. Google seems to be slowly rolling this new feature out to various people around the world via a server-side switch. Android Police reports that users in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Portugal, Sweden, the UK, and the US seem to be some of the first to see this new feature in the Google Maps application.
