Since it was first acquired by Lenovo from Google, Motorola has not been afraid to innovate, try new things, and make radical changes to their smartphone lineup to adapt with the times. Since 2016, they’ve launched all-new devices such as the Moto Z, their flagship(ish) line, and last year they introduced the Motorola One, their first smartphone since 2013 that does not have the Moto moniker, but it instead belongs to a completely separate device line, part of the Android One program. The Motorola One Vision is the next evolution.
Today, they’ve introduced the Motorola One Vision, their first device to sport a hole-punch display, and also brings a lot of firsts for Motorola in many different aspects. We’ve caught wind of the rumors a couple of months back, but now it has been officially confirmed and it’s coming soon to store shelves. While it may look on paper like a normal, inexpensive midrange device, it’s so unusual and unlike anything we’ve seen from Motorola previously that we can’t help but wanting to know more about it. Let’s dive right into it.

As we said previously, the Motorola One Vision marks a lot of firsts for Motorola. For one, it is their first device to bring a full-screen experience with a notch alternative: this alternative being a hole-punch display. Other popular devices, such as the Honor View 20 and the Samsung Galaxy S10, employ this approach to try and avoid using a notch. In my opinion, though, it doesn’t really provide a lot of advantages over a notch, but some people do prefer this design.
It is also the first device from Motorola to pack a 21:9 display, made possible thanks to the hole-punch camera. We’ve only seen such a display from Sony, which has featured 21:9 displays in devices such as the Xperia 10 and the Xperia 10 Plus. Other manufacturers have opted for slightly wider aspect ratios, like 19:9 and 19.5:9, and Samsung has even opted for 20:9 displays on some of their mid-range phones.
Going into the camera, Motorola is calling this their most advanced camera to date. The Motorola One Vision features a 48-megapixel sensor as the main sensor—unlike other phones such as the OnePlus 7 Pro, though, Motorola is going for a Samsung sensor instead of the IMX586 we’ve been seeing recently. It still employs the same concept, though, which Motorola is calling the QuadPixel technology. We also have a 5MP secondary sensor which is solely for portrait mode. The front-facing hole-punch camera features a 25MP resolution, and it should be able to provide decent selfies, megapixel-count aside.
The SoC is also a first. Instead of going for a Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek processor like Motorola has usually done in the past, Motorola is instead going for a midrange, octa-core Exynos 9609 processor. With this, Motorola has joined the very select list of smartphone manufacturers using Samsung’s Exynos processors, with the only other major player being Meizu and, of course, Samsung themselves. Other specifications include 128 GB of storage, 4 GB of RAM, and Android Pie out of the box, with the Android One seal of approval guaranteeing a mostly bloat-free stock Android experience.
The Motorola One Vision is now officially available in Brazil and is set to release in Mexico during the following days, with a wider release in Latin America in the next few weeks. It’s also set to go on sale throughout Europe, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand. The Motorola One Vision is available in both Bronze and Sapphire Blue presentations.
