We’re finally heading into the dawn of the next generation of telecommunication i.e. 5G. While Samsung seems to have won the race to be the first smartphone manufacturer to launch the first commercially available 5G handset – even though it is off to a rough start, other companies are rushing in to launch their 5G-capable smartphones – mostly flagships. Among these key brands, three i.e. Huawei, OPPO, and Xiaomi are making a 5G debut in the EU with parallel launches of their flagships in Switzerland.
Trashing OPPO’s hopes and its claims about being the first smartphone brand to make commercial 5G devices, i.e. OPPO Reno, available in Europe, Xiaomi and Huawei have that they will launch the Mi MIX 3 and the Mate 20 X on the very next day. While OPPO Reno will be available via Swisscom starting today i.e. May 1, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 and Huawei Mate 20 X shall be available through another telco – Sunrise – from tomorrow (May 2) onwards.
All the three smartphones sit at the top of the ladder in terms of specifications, alongside the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. This indicates that 5G is likely to remain off the cards for most of the users and only available to those who can afford a flagship smartphone. To get their hands on the OPPO Reno 5G, the Swiss will have to shell out 999 Swiss Francs (~$980). Meanwhile, the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G will be priced really close, at 997 Swiss Francs (~$980) but you can get a cheaper option in form of the Mi MIX 3 5G, which will cost 847 Swiss Francs (~$830).
As for the hardware of the three smartphones, all three come with leading specifications. While the OPPO Reno and the Mi MIX 3 feature Snapdragon 855 chipsets, the Mate 20 X is powered by Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 980. Mi MIX 3 is the only device out of the suite that which offer a 6GB RAM, while the other two smartphones only have the option of 8GB RAM. The 6GB RAM variant of the Xiaomi flagship will also have a lower storage option i.e. 64GB or 128GB, while the other two will sport 256GB storages.
Lastly, Huawei Mate 20 X 5G will be the only smartphone of the bunch to support Standalone solution (inherently for 5G networks) along with non-standalone network solution (in which existing LTE equipment is upgraded to support 5G). As per Huawei, this might result in the longevity of the device to support faster versions of 5G in the future.
