The OnePlus 7 Pro is yet to be officially revealed but the wide range of leaks as well as official teases substantiate the premise that with this new smartphone, OnePlus may finally onboard the flagship bandwagon and offer the experience of a truly premium smartphone. While OnePlus smartphones have always had the leading specifications for unrivaled performance, the ingredients that will add up to this “buttery smooth” flagship experience on the 7 Pro include a 90Hz display with an A+ rating from Display Mate, a 3X telephoto setup, and the super-fast UFS 3.0 storage system. Now, the company has highlighted another merit of the upgraded display that will enhance the experience while watching video content from producers like Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox. The Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display on the OnePlus 7 Pro will be certified for HDR10+ standard.
Spawned by Samsung, HDR10+ takes HDR10 a step further with its ability to reproduce a much wider dynamic range in terms of the content. Any display certified for HDR10+ can produce a peak brightness of 4000 nits compared to 3000 nits on an HDR10 panel. The protocol is an extension of HDR10 in a way that it uses dynamic metadata about the specific content such that parameters like the brightness and contrast continuously adapt to the requirements per scene, ensuring that there’s sufficient visibility all the time – much similar to Dolby Vision.
While HDR10+ is mostly seen on UHD (or higher-res) TVs from brands including Samsung and Panasonic, as well as certain 4K Blue-Ray players, the Samsung Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ are two of the smartphones that support the protocol. But, since it is a royalty-free (unlike Dolby Vision) standard, many manufacturers may soon follow the suit just like OnePlus. In a press announcement, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau noted he hopes that the new display on the OnePlus 7 Pro “will set a new benchmark for the smartphone industry and open up a new world of visual fluidity for users.”
Given the significance of an improved display on the TBA OnePlus 7 Pro, the company is also offering a one-time free replacement for Indian users who pre-book the smartphone and purchase it within the first 60 hours of the sale. Meanwhile, there’s one thing that OnePlus may miss in terms of offering a flagship experience and that is an IP rating, even though we’re hoping that the OnePlus 7 Pro will have decent protection against splashes.

We’re fairly excited about the OnePlus 7 Pro (not so much for the OnePlus 7, which the company hasn’t bothered to talk about yet), and will be learning more about the actual performance of the display with the launch of the smartphone, which is pegged for May 14. If you’re as interested as us, you can watch the simultaneous launch events from New York, London, and Bangalore live.
