The main keynote of Google I/O 2019 may be done and over with but the developer conference will continue through until the end of today. During the event, we’ve learned a lot about new hardware products, new services coming to users in the future, and more. This week some big news was announced in regards to Google’s Maps SDK for Android. A new beta is available for developers who want to try out an early version of the SDK. We’re told this will bring better performance and support for apps compared to the current SDK.
Application developers leverage version tools to bring you the features they offer in their work. For applications that wanted access to Google Maps data, they used the Maps SDK for Android. Unless you’re a developer, you probably didn’t know that the Maps SDK for Android isn’t built on entirely the same infrastructure as the Google Maps mobile app. This lead to some issues including hits to performance, the amount of time it takes to bring on new features, and just overall better stability for the end-user.
Developers have been giving their feedback to Google about this issue for a while now and things are moving in the right direction. Engineers at the Mountain View tech giant have worked for months to refactor and improve upon a new beta version of the Maps SDK for Android. Beyond the improvements to performance and faster access to newer features, this new beta SDK should net the end-user a 60% decrease in Maps-related data consumption. This beta is also focused on improved stability as well and we’re told that it includes fixes to more than 65 of the top issues reported by the developer community.
Developers who want to try out this new beta SDK are encouraged to review their migration guide as it will walk you through the process. Remember though, this is a beta SDK so please submit any bugs you may have discovered directly to Google here.
