Firefox 67 adds speed improvements for desktop, a new Search widget on Android

Mozilla’s Firefox isn’t the most popular web browser around, but it’s almost the only competitor left for Google Chrome. Its open-source nature and the focus on privacy are just some of the features that let Firefox stay relevant in the market. The development team behind the product always work hard to improve user experience by fixing the bugs and expanding the functionality. Mozilla just pushed version 67 of Firefox on desktop and Android platforms. Most of the changes are hidden under the hood, but there are some noticeable ones.

The changelog for the Android version is laconic. There is only one new feature, and it’s an addition of Firefox Search widget for the home screen. The widget also supports voice input. Firefox 67 also removes the Guest Session feature. Mozilla recommends users to use Private Browsing mode, or use the device’s own guest mode feature. The update also fixes critical and highly impactful security vulnerabilities.

As for the desktop, the changelog is much longer. Probably the most notable change is the improved performance, which is possible thanks to changes like suspending unused tabs and delayed component initialization. Content Blocking gets a new feature which lets you block cryptominers and fingerprinters from the preferences. You can also install several versions of Firefox at once, as Mozilla moved to a profile-per-install architecture. Firefox 67 also uses AV1 decoder, which was previously added in Google Chrome. On the privacy-protection side, installed extensions will now be disabled by default in Private Windows. You can turn it on in the settings.

You can see the full changelog for Android here and for desktop here. The update is available and your browser should receive it automatically. If it didn’t, you can always check for updates manually from browser preferences on desktop and Play Store on mobile.
