Mobile gaming has been huge ever since independent developers began releasing games on iOS and Android devices. The game categories are the biggest in their respective platforms and it has unleashed the free to play game economy that we know today. The increase in popularity of console graphics quality games has encouraged more mainstream game studios to release ports of their games on these mobile devices. It has just been revealed that EA currently has plans to bring Apex Legends to mobile devices and Dead Cells will be brought to both Android and iOS.
Before we had these indie developers filling up the games section of these app stores, but that has slowly begun to change. The indie developers still outweigh the mainstream ones but the tide is currently turning. Thanks to the success of games such as PUBG Mobile and Fortnite, we are seeing other triple-A game developers wanting a piece of the pie as well. Bethesda recently launched The Elder Scrolls: Blades on Android (in beta) and EA has confirmed they want to bring Apex Legends to mobile devices in the near future.
Dead Cells is a roguelike, Metroidvania game developed by Motion Twin that was originally released in August of last year. While Apex Legends follows the trends of a battle royal style game, Dead Cells is a minimalistic game that feeds you crumbs of story and lore throughout its gameplay. Both are two completely different game genres, but both have received a lot of positive praise as of late. These development studios want to leverage the current success and hype surrounding these games by making them available on mobile devices.
Whether or not they will be faithful to the original or stuffed with timers and microtransactions remains to be seen. Although, it is clear that these two games could make a major impact on the mobile gaming space while also steering traditional gaming development to mobile devices as well.
