[Update: New render] Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL renders show headphone jacks, no notches, and hint at Google I/O launch

The Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL (formerly known as the Pixel 3 Lite) has been on our radar for a while now. Rumors of a more affordable Pixel device started over a year ago, but it wasn’t until last Fall that we got our first look at the devices. Recently, there has been speculation that Google will officially announce the devices at Google I/O. Now, leaked press renders add more evidence to that theory.

We’ve seen renders from accessory makers and renders that have been created based on information. These new leaked renders are said to be official end product images. Therefore, the information on the phone screen is just as important as the hardware. There’s nothing too special about the hardware here. The devices have larger bezels with no notches or display cutouts and 3.5mm headphone jacks on top. While sized differently, the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL look identical.

The more interesting part of this leak is the information shown on the phone screen. We can clearly see the date “Tuesday, May 7” on the At a Glance widget. That is the same day as Google I/O and the same day that Google teased “something big is coming to the Pixel universe.” Google is known to put launch dates in product screenshots, so this is a very good clue. We may be just weeks away from seeing these phones.

As a refresher, the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL are said to be “budget” offerings in the Pixel line. The Pixel 3a has a 5.6-inch display while the Pixel 3a XL is slightly bigger at 6-inches. Both devices are said to have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The smaller model is rumored to have the Snapdragon 670 while the XL may have the Snapdragon 710. They both will have 12MP cameras like the main Pixel 3 devices. Lastly, the Pixel 3a is said to have a 3,000 mAh battery and the Pixel 3a XL may be sized at 3.430 mAh.

Pricing is the big detail that is still up in the air. Specs and design are important, but ultimately, the success of a “budget” or mid-range device is highly dependent on pricing. The market for an affordable phone is extremely competitive and Google will have to price these devices aggressively to make a dent. We already heard that T-Mobile may offer the phones, which would be a good start.
