The Samsung Galaxy Fold was launched alongside the Samsung Galaxy S10 in February 2019. The highlight of the device is undoubtedly its foldable display and hinge mechanism, but the rest of the phone is also equally exciting. And it should be, for it costs a staggering $1,980; so you better get the best consumer technology available.
Around its launch, Samsung was curiously vague about several internal features. Samsung’s press release and product page for the Galaxy Fold said that the device is powered by a “7nm 64-bit Octa-core processor,” which most news outlets understandably assumed to be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform given that the Exynos 9820 is an 8nm chip. However, since Samsung didn’t explicitly mention it, we were cautious in assuming that the Fold would come with a Snapdragon 855. The confirmation regarding the SoC came through the build.prop present inside the combination firmware of the Fold SM-F900U, which contained references to “sm8150”, Snapdragon 855’s internal model name.
However, since the Galaxy Fold would be targeting the US market, the existence of the Snapdragon 855 is not very surprising. Samsung routinely launches flagships with Qualcomm SoCs in the US, while the rest of the world gets the same flagship but with an Exynos SoC. The Galaxy Fold, though, breaks routine, as Samsung has made no mention of a variant with the Exynos 9820 SoC as found in the international variants of the Galaxy S10. This left people confused on what is happening, and since the Fold costs a lot of money, it is imperative that you are absolutely certain about what you are buying.
Samsung Galaxy Fold XDA Forums
We can now confirm that the international variant of the Samsung Galaxy Fold, i.e. the SM-F900F, will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC and not the Exynos 9820. XDA Recognized Developer deadman96385 has shared with us the firmware dump from the international variant of the device, and the build.prop inside it contains the same set of references that we saw in the SM-F900U:
ro.hardware.chipname=SM8150
We do not know if any variant of the Galaxy Fold exists with the Exynos 9820. We will keep our readers updated if we find anything more.
Thanks to XDA Recognized Developer deadman96385 for the firmware dump!
