It appears that LG is taking the unprecedented step of releasing its next V-series flagship alongside the G-series, as Korean blog ETNews indicated that the LG V50 ThinQ 5G will be released in the Spring alongside the LG G8 ThinQ. We’ve already reported that LG would release a 5G phone separately from the LG G8, but it seems it may be this year’s V-series flagship released a half-year early.
The strategy seems to be to release a 5G phone early so as not to be left in the dust by the competition, but also release a more budget-friendly alternative for customers who can’t afford to make the leap to 5G yet. It indeed promises to be a costly leap, much like the first generation of 4G devices 8 years ago, as ETNews pegs the LG V50 ThinQ 5G’s price between 1.3 million Korean Won (about $1,162 US) and 1.5 million Won (about $1,342 US). The cost of competing 5G phones in 2019 also promises to be well north of the thousand dollar threshold.
The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is expected to launch with a 6-inch display (no indication whether it will have the same notch as the LG V40 ThinQ just as the LG G8 ThinQ looks nearly identical to the LG G7 ThinQ), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform, and a 4,000mAh battery. ETNews seems to believe the UI will be entirely gesture-driven, which may mean no navigation buttons at all. I certainly hope this is not the case, but even Google seems to be eliminating the navigation bar in favor of gestures.
ETNews further speculates that the unprecedented concurrent release of the LG G8 ThinQ and the LG V50 ThinQ 5G could spell the end of the G-series while LG introduces a new flagship line for the latter half of the year. If this is the case I must wonder if LG’s second-half flagship will feature a foldable display.
