Xiaomi has been teasing the Mi Play for a while now, and all we really knew about it is that it has a display notch. TENAA (China’s FCC) revealed a little bit more about the device, but it wasn’t enough to piece together everything about it. The company has now announced the Xiaomi Mi Play in China, and it features a MediaTek P35, 4GB of RAM, and a waterdrop notch. This is the first device that Xiaomi has put a waterdrop notch on.

The Xiaomi Mi Play is a solid mid-range smartphone powered by the MediaTek P35 system-on-chip. MediaTek backed out of the flagship market a year ago as they couldn’t really compete with the likes of Qualcomm, HiSilicon and Exynos. It’s not going to be the most powerful device around, but it’s a decent smartphone with a lot to show for itself. It looks nice and it’ll perform decently, despite the mid-range SoC and eMMC 5.1 storage. What’s most strange is that it launches with MIUI 10 based on Android Oreo, given that a number of the company’s handsets already have Android Pie. Interestingly as well, the TENAA listing suggested more RAM and storage options, yet the company hasn’t announced those. It’s possible we’ll see more RAM and storage options announced at a later date.
As for the cameras, the company is pushing that they are “AI-powered” cameras with AI scene detection, beauty mode, and portrait mode. The primary camera on the back is a 12MP shooter, with the single front-facing camera being an 8MP shooter. The front-facing camera is housed inside the waterdrop notch. If that’s not enough “AI” for you, you’ll also get all the AI features included in MIUI 10.
The Xiaomi Mi Play has launched at a very respectable price, costing only 1,099 Yuan, or roughly $159. For a full HD display, decent chipset and 4GB of RAM, that’s a pretty great price. It is unknown if the Xiaomi Mi Play will get an international release, or if it will be a Chinese exclusive. It goes on sale tomorrow in stores, with it being available to order from today.
