Many OEMs work with Google throughout the year on their next version of Android. However, some OEMs end up waiting until the end of the year (to the first quarter of next year) before they start rolling out their next big version of Android. For Xiaomi, this is their MIUI 10 OEM ROM, but sadly this means that not all of these updates are based on Android Pie. The company has still been working hard since a lot of these older (and newer) devices are still getting new features.
You can follow all of the MIUI 10 activity right here so you can have a glimpse at the work Xiaomi has been putting into supporting these old phones. Thankfully, some of them are getting updated to Android Pie and with that comes the need for new kernel source codes. To keep things all in one place, the company has just recently published a shared kernel source code branch for the Xiaomi POCO F1, Xiaomi Mi 8, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3. You can find this on their GitHub page (linked below) and it will inevitably spawn some developer activity around Android Pie for these devices.
