Motorola appears to have another P-series phone headed to the Chinese market, and according to renders published by @Onleaks via 91Mobiles, their 2019 take on it will feature a hole-punch camera instead of the iPhone-esque display notch. Dubbed the Motorola P40, its primary rear camera is also expected to be a 48MP snapper comparable to Huawei’s Honor View 20 and Nova 4 as well as an upcoming phone teased by Xiaomi. It is purported to run the Android One flavor of Android Pie. The 48MP sensor is part of a raised dual camera array reminiscent of the iPhone and the OnePlus 5T. It’s only the fourth phone we’ve heard of that will feature a hole-punch display, joining the Samsung Galaxy A8s and the aforementioned Honor View 20 and Nova 4.
The exact processor model is unknown at this time, but given that the Motorola P30 uses the Snapdragon 636, it’s reasonable to expect a 600-series Qualcomm processor this time around as well (or perhaps a Snapdragon 710). The nearly wall-to-wall display is made possible by the hole-punch front-facing camera. The display is expected to be a 2310×1080 LCD affair with a slightly thick bottom bezel featuring the “Motorola” wordmark.
The renders depict a truly attractive design that combines a forward-thinking display and a couple of nods to the past and present in the form of a 3.5mm headphone jack and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor with the Motorola logo emblazoned on it. The chassis appears to flaunt a glass rear panel which could allow for wireless charging.
Given that the P30 was exclusive to China with international variants branded the Motorola One and the Motorola One Power, 2019 could see something similar. Hopefully the international variants will preserve the P40’s 48MP primary rear sensor and the nearly bezel-less hole-punch display.
