It’s rare for a smartphone company to push out an OTA update to their flagship smartphones once they pass the 2-year mark. OnePlus launched the OnePlus 3 back in June of 2016 and we’re just shy of 2 weeks after the 2nd year anniversary of the OnePlus 3T. Still, the company is supporting these new devices with OTA updates that bring in new features. This week it was announced that both OnePlus 3 variants would be receiving an OxygenOS OTA update that adds support for their new earbuds and includes the latest Android security patches.
We’re only now starting to see select OEMs support their smartphones with 3 years of security updates. A new Android contract was reported last month that mandated 2 years of security updates for devices that have over 100,000 activations. It was last year that Google promised their Pixel smartphones would receive 3 years of security updates, so now some other OEMs are upping their game to match the competition. So, those who own the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T can look forward to OxygenOS version 5.0.7 to include the November 2018 security updates.
That’s not the only feature included in this OTA update though. OnePlus recently launched the OnePlus 6T and sadly it did not come with a 3.5mm headphone port. This port as a feature was something the company held over their competition’s heads when they launched the OnePlus 6 earlier this year. However, that launch also featured a pair of wireless OnePlus Bullets so many pessimists within the community knew the day was coming when the 3.5mm headphone port was going.
So with the launch of the OnePlus 6T the company had to release an accessory to replace their original OnePlus Bullets which had a headphone jack connector. For those who are not a fan of wireless audio, the OnePlus 6T launch also featured a pair of OnePlus Bullets which featured a USB Type-C connector. Each of the earphone products that OnePlus sells has their own audio profile so with this update these are included for the Type-C OnePlus Bullets for the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T.
This is an incremental OTA update and we are told that only a small amount of current OnePlus 3/3T owners will be receiving this update upon its announcement. However, they will begin a broader rollout later this week.
