Display holes, or notches as they are also popularly referred to, have become increasingly popular in the smartphone industry. What started off as a way to maximize screen real estate and shrink down bezels has evolved into a trend that often results in some unconventional design decisions. Leaked videos of an alleged Asus ZenFone 6 prototype indicates that Asus might be aiming more for the latter than the former for their next flagship.
According to videos and photos posted by HDBlog.it, the upcoming ZenFone 6 (2019) may sport a display hole akin to the Essential PH-1 to house the front camera. What separates this smartphone from other phones with display notches is the bizarre design choice to not centre the notch.
Once you get over the offset display hole, you can spot the earpiece slit sandwiched between the top bezel and the seemingly metallic frame of the phone. There’s also the large display with rounded corners, and a seemingly large bezel on the bottom of the display.
The ZenFone 6 appears to be using glass for both the front and the back of the device, with a metallic frame between the two. The back of the device houses two cameras and the fingerprint sensor. The bottom of the device sports the speaker grille, a USB Type-C port and thankfully, a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Based on the unpolished construction of the device, the device pictured appears to be a working prototype rather than a finished product. This means that there could still be more changes that Asus decides are necessary for the commercial success of their next flagship. There’s even a small chance that this design may be one of the scrapped designs, and the final product may have everything centered and perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
More information on the Asus ZenFone 6 (2019) is expected in the coming weeks as the device gears up for its launch at MWC 2019 in Barcelona.
