Surprising or not, Xiaomi devices are some of the most popular ones on the XDA Forums and the portal. Fortunately, Xiaomi very well knows that and they have never restricted the developer community. Kernel source codes are a vital part of Android custom ROM or kernel development, as developers have to build on top of it. Back in April of this year, the company gave us a statement that they would release kernel source code of devices within 3 months after launch. As shown by a couple of examples, Xiaomi has lived up to this commitment.
First, it was the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S – the company released its kernel source code within the first month of the release. Then came Xiaomi Mi A2 and A2 Lite, with almost the same time period. Xiaomi Mi 8 and Poco F1 also got the kernel source codes at a lighting speed. But, there is one device that remains without the development love: the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4.
The 8-inch tablet with MIUI 9 and Snapdragon 660 was released back in April of 2018, well past the promised three month period. It was praised as one of the best Android tablets by many, as the device has pretty much everything one might need for their entertaining need. Big full HD screen? Check. Massive 6,000 mAh battery? Check. USB Type-C port? Check. More than capable system-on-chip? Also, check.
If you look into Mi Pad 4 Forum on XDA, you will only see a few MIUI-based firmware. AOSP-based custom ROMs or custom kernels will not be available until Xiaomi releases the source code for the tablet. We have reached out to the company and will update the article if we have anything new to share.
