OnePlus will release a 5G-capable phone next year

OnePlus 5G

After cornering the market on high-end affordable devices since the launch of OnePlus 3T, the company is ready to get ahead of the industry by being one of the first manufacturers to release a 5G-powered smartphone. Although the upcoming smartphone, the OnePlus 6T, might not sport 5G capabilities, the next flagship OnePlus releases could very well be the first smartphone to do so, ever.

Quite recently, during Qualcomm’s 4G/5G summit at Hong Kong, Qualcomm president Cristiano Amon announced at least two new smartphones supporting 5G next year. Carl Pie, OnePlus’s Founder, joined Amon on stage and revealed that the company will release a 5G powered smartphone next year. This only confirms the fact that OnePlus, the smartphone manufacturer that claims to release nothing less than flagships, is planning to stay on top of the competition.

According to a report by Engadget, a team from OnePlus flew down to Qualcomm’s HQ in San Diego in order to conduct a test revolving around 5G back in August. Earlier in the year, Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon announced the release of a flagship during H1 2019 (the first half of 2019) which, according to Engadget, might rely on the Snapdragon X50 5G modem and the further downsized QTM052 mmWave antenna module.

It goes without saying but beating upstart OnePlus to the rat-race of having bleeding edge specs could prove to be tough for larger manufacturers. We’re anxious to see how manufacturers adapt to 5G capabilities.
