A new type of smartphones is slowly rising. The prevalent design goal in smartphones this year has been to reduce bezels. However, device makers can’t remove the front-facing camera, which now becomes an obstacle. This is the reason why the display notch has become so common this year as a compromise. At the end of the day, the notch remains a compromise, which is why some device makers have been looking towards unconventional ways to remove it. The removal of the notch has been achieved in a few smartphones this year thanks to the use of a popup front-facing camera, or a motorized bezel, or even a manual slider. The Vivo NEX was the first 2018 flagship to adopt moving parts for the front-facing camera, and it was followed by the OPPO Find X. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and the Honor Magic 2 are two upcoming smartphones that have been confirmed to have a manual slider.

Honor first teased the Honor Magic 2 back at IFA. Honor’s CEO confirmed at the time that the phone would be powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 980 SoC, just like the flagship Huawei Mate 20 series. It will have a slide-out design, which is called Magic Slide. The phone will be launched in China on October 31. Now, it has received TENAA certification, revealing nearly everything about the phone.
