LineageOS 15.1 beta & Pixel Experience now available for the Xiaomi Mi Note 3

Xiaomi Mi Note 3

Xiaomi has made a name for themselves within the smartphone community thanks to a number of things they do right. The price points they hit for the hardware level and design quality is difficult to beat, and they have typically been friendly to the developer community (although that may be shifting right now). Their Redmi and Redmi Note devices sell by the millions, but the company also has a number of other smartphone series with the Mi Note 3 being quite popular for them. It’s been a year since the smartphone was first released and fans of custom ROMs should know that two new options are currently available including LineageOS 15.1 and the Pixel Experience.

LineageOS 15.1 for Xiaomi Mi Note 3

The build of LineageOS 15.1 for the Mi Note 3 comes to us thanks to the work from XDA Recognized Developer dianlujitao, who is also giving credit to the LineageOS team contributors and the Code Aurora Forum. A day after its initial release, the developer pushed out an update that added experimental support for Project Treble and fixed a bootloop after secure boot was enabled. They also include these tips for anyone who is interested in using this custom ROM:

  • SELinux works in permissive mode
  • You need at least MIUI10 CN stable firmware, otherwise, you’ll get error 7 when installing the zip.
  • The build is beta quality now and not well tested, use at your own risk, bug reports are welcomed.

Pixel Experience for the Xiaomi Mi Note 3

Next up we have another custom ROM for those who are fans of the popular Pixel Experience series. This work was made possible for the Mi Note 3 thanks to XDA Senior Member EnesSastim, who also includes dianlujitao in his list of people who helped to get this custom ROM up and running. Some worry about camera quality degradation from using custom ROMs and since the Mi Note 3 from Xiaomi did score well in its DxOMark review, some people may be wary to use either of them. However, it should be noted that Gcam and Camera2 API work just fine here so you can still use it to shoot some impressive images.
