Another day, another Google app with an updated design. Not that we’re complaining, of course, because we love the new design. This time, Google Photos is joining the list of Google apps with the latest Google Material Theme (commonly called Material Design 2.) Besides the new design, the only notable change in functionality is that you can see a photo’s metadata by swiping up on a photo instead of tapping on “info” in the overflow menu.
Google Photos v4.0 Material Theme refresh
The top row of screenshots shows off the new Google Photos design on my Google Pixel 2 XL. The bottom row is from the Google Photos app on my OnePlus 6. In my opinion, the new design is a great improvement over the original design. The colors and icons feel more consistent when compared to the previous design. Sure, there’s a lot of white used throughout the UI, but we hope that the app gets a dark theme like some of the other Google apps have gotten recently.
In the past month, we’ve seen Google Contacts, Google Phone, Android Messages, and Google Chrome receive an updated design based on Google’s latest Material Theme guidelines. I wonder which Google app will be next to receive a fresh coat of paint. Google has tested new layouts in the Google Home app, Google Play Games, and the Google App so it’s possible any of these apps could be next. You can download the latest version of the app from the Google Play Store below, but if it hasn’t rolled out for you yet then you can grab it from APKMirror.
