Alleged Nokia 9 flagship with five rear cameras shows up online

Nokia 9

At XDA, we’re generally pretty conservative when it comes to covering smartphone leaks. There are so many leaks—many of which are fake—that it’s hard to know what’s real. It’s especially difficult to tell whether something is true when you don’t know the credibility of the source, which is why we skip most leaks originating from Chinese microblogging website Weibo or other Chinese forums. This time, however, a reliable leaker of Nokia-branded products, XDA Senior Member Hikari_Calyx, tipped us about the leak of what’s allegedly the upcoming Nokia 9 flagship. The leak first appeared on the ITHome forums and was later picked up by ITHome itself, although ITHome believes this could be the Nokia 10. In any case, here’s a photo of what’s allegedly the Nokia 9 with a unique five rear camera setup.

This is the first clear photo of what may be the next Nokia-branded flagship smartphone from HMD Global. The other day, NokiaPowerUser claimed that they had a photo of the back panel from the Nokia 9 that showed off its Penta-Lens camera module. Today’s leak corroborates that rumor, though we’re still a bit skeptical given the source. @Hikari_Calyx is a prolific leaker of Nokia-branded prototypes and was involved in the creation of the only unofficial bootloader unlock tool for Nokia-branded smartphones, so we do believe there’s a chance this device is the next Nokia-branded flagship smartphone.

HMD Global’s first flagship smartphone was the Nokia 8 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip. The Nokia 8 Sirocco was their next flagship smartphone and it also had the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC. The Nokia 9 is expected to sport the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset as well as an in-display fingerprint scanner. The Nokia 9 is poised to be a killer 2018 Android flagship smartphone judging by the specification list, and if the Penta-Lens camera is true, it’ll put the upcoming LG V40 ThinQ to shame.
