Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 kernel source code is now available

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is one of the most interesting smartphones released this year because of its nearly bezel-less design, thanks to its magnetic slider. The phone launched in China late last month but has yet to launch internationally. The stylish device has a premium ceramic body with colors like Jade Green, and there’s even a model with up to 10GB RAM. Like other Xiaomi flagship devices, the Mi Mix 3 runs MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie. For those of you looking for an AOSP-based custom ROM, we have some good news for you: the kernel source code for the device has been released.

You can download the kernel sources for the Mi Mix 3, code-named “perseus,” at the link below. Developers who are interested in the device can now take a stab at building a custom ROM for the phone.

This is Xiaomi’s sixth device on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 platform after the launch of the Mi Mix 2S, Mi 8, Mi 8 Explorer Edition, POCO F1, and Mi 8 Pro. We’re nearing the end of 2018, but Xiaomi may have another surprise up their sleeves. We’ll let you know about any upcoming Xiaomi devices as we learn about them, so stay tuned!

This is the Motorola Moto G7 Power with a 5000mAh battery

Motorola Moto G7 Power

Motorola is preparing to launch 4 devices under the Moto G7 brand this year: the Moto G7, Moto G7 Plus, Moto G7 Play, and Moto G7 Power. Motorola has previously released “Play” and “Plus” variants of their G series devices which are generally lower and higher-end models of the standard device. The new “Power” variant seems to be between the “Play” and the standard model in that it sports mid-range specifications, but it’ll also have a massive 5,000mAh battery that dwarfs the battery capacity of the other 3 models.

One model number for the upcoming Moto G7 Power has appeared on the FCC, revealing the battery capacity, device dimensions, rear design (as shown in the feature image above), and connectivity information. We have also been holding onto information from a reliable source detailing some of the other specifications of the device that we now feel comfortable in sharing. First, here’s what we’ve learned about the device from the FCC.

XT1955-4, One of Five Moto G7 Power Model Numbers

The certification documents for a device with model number XT1955-4 was published just a few hours ago, and the battery information reveals that the device has a battery capacity of 5,000mAh.

Next, we can see that the device measures 159mm x 76mm with a diagonal of 167mm. The device has a single rear camera. We can’t see the dimensions of the display from this schematic, unfortunately.Next, here is a table with the connectivity information for the device. The device supports NFC, but that depends on the region.

Rumored Motorola Moto G7 Power Specifications

We have been given evidence that the Moto G7 Power, code-named “ocean,” is based on the “msm8953” platform by Qualcomm. The msm8953 typically denotes the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, but our source has clarified that the device is, in fact, running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 platform with the Adreno 506 GPU. (We should note that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450, 625, 626, and 632 are pin and software compatible, which is why a device may show “msm8953” in a benchmark for all 4 of these mobile platforms.) The use of the Snapdragon 632 matches the information that has surfaced recently for the Moto G7 Play. The Snapdragon 632 is built on a FinFET 14nm process and introduces Kryo 250 semi-custom CPU cores with four Cortex-A73 performance cores and four Cortex-A53 efficiency cores. We were given information that the device will come in 2, 3, and 4 GB RAM versions, and that there will be 32 or 64GB storage models. We don’t know how the RAM and storage models will be combined, however.

The device has a single rear-facing 12MP f/2.0 sensor and a single front-facing 8MP f/2.2 sensor. We’re told that some of the device’s camera features include the new Cinemagraph mode from the Moto Z3 Play, spot coloring, and the ability to take bokeh shots with the single rear camera. The device is running Android 9 Pie out of the box, though it’s not going to be an Android One device.

As for the display, our source isn’t entirely sure of the exact specification. We were told to expect a 6.22-inch HD+ notched display, which is close to the dimensions shown in the schematics shown above when accounting for the bottom bezel. The colors we should expect include Indigo, Silver, “Blush,” and Black. We don’t know if all colors will be available at launch, however.

Motorola Moto G7 Variants

In future articles, we will share the information we have gathered on the other Moto G7 models. For now, we’ll leave you with the devices’ marketing names, code-names, and model numbers to end any confusion about each of the devices.

  • Motorola Moto G7 (code-named “river”) with model numbers XT1962-1, XT1962-4, XT1962-5, XT1962-6
  • Motorola Moto G7 Play (code-named “channel”) with model numbers XT1952-1, XT1952-2, XT1952-3/XT1952-4/XT1952DL
  • Motorola Moto G7 Plus (code-named “lake”) with model numbers XT1965-2, XT1965-3
  • Motorola Moto G7 Power (code-named “ocean”) with model numbers XT1955-1, XT1955-2, XT1955-4, XT1955-7

We have also recently obtained information on a device code-named “odin” running on the sm8150 platform which may be the Motorola Moto Z4, and we are also gathering information on other new devices. Stay tuned to the XDA Portal!

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is getting an Android Pie beta update in China

Xiaomi has had a busy year marked by lots of hits, among them the Xiaomi Mi 8 line of flagship smartphones. The Xiaomi Mi 8 was the first device in Xiaomi’s fleet to embrace the display notch trend, but the powerful hardware specifications including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and new software features including facial recognition enhanced by an IR camera more than made up for it. The device’s success has spawned two more variants on top of the Mi 8 EE and Mi 8 SE that launched alongside it. The mid-range Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite and flagship Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro with a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint scanner have both made their way to some international markets. If you own the latter device, then you’ll be glad to know that the official Android Pie beta should be coming soon as the Chinese model has received its first few betas.

Android 9 Pie comes to the Xiaomi Mi 8 UD (the name for the Mi 8 Pro in China) with MIUI 10 China Developer ROM version 8.11.28, which you can download and side-load via MIUI Updater in system settings if you are already running MIUI 10 China Stable ROM. Alternatively, you can flash it via TWRP if you have the Global version of the device so long as you have an unlocked bootloader. Keep in mind that MIUI China ROMs do not have Google Play Store pre-installed built-in and only offer Mandarin Chinese and English languages, so some of you may prefer waiting for the Global ROM release.

Alleged Huawei Nova 4 may launch soon with a display hole for the camera

Bezel-less designs are one of the top smartphone design trends in 2018 as nearly every major company competed to make truly fullscreen displays. Some have gotten close to the goal, but there are still limitations to overcome. Display notches reduce the top bezel, but OEMs still need to make room for the front-facing camera and other sensors. Some devices like the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and Honor Magic 2 hide the front-facing camera in a hidden area that the user accesses by sliding the phone down. We’ve recently heard that display manufacturers were beginning to create displays with holes in them to hold the front-facing camera. Until now, we thought that Samsung would be the first to release a smartphone with a hole in the display. As shared on Huawei’s official Weibo page, however, Huawei is preparing to launch a new smartphone with a display hole. That phone may very well be the Huawei Nova 4, as spotted by WinFuture.

Huawei Nova 4

We don’t know much about this particular device other than the fact that it has a hole in the display for the front-facing camera. You be the judge of whether it’s better than having a display notch, but I see it as a temporary workaround until truly bezel-less displays (without sliders) are possible. Huawei didn’t show off the back of the device, so there’s not much to see about the alleged Nova 4 at this time.

As you can see from the above picture, despite the camera hole, the device still has a noticeable bezel on the sides. The photo may make the phone’s bezels look larger than they will look in-person, or it’s possible that the photo accurately reflects the experience we’ll get. The alleged Huawei Nova 4 will be announced in December, so we don’t have to wait long to find out.

Note: Huawei has stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloader of the alleged Huawei Nova 4 cannot be unlocked, which means that users cannot flash Magisk/TWRP/AOSP-based custom ROMs.

Nokia 8.1 marketing leaks, may launch soon as rebranded Nokia X7

It hasn’t been that long since the Nokia brand was revitalized after HMD Global acquired the rights to use the branding. Nokia-branded Android smartphones have been wildly successful thanks to low-priced mid-range and budget smartphones with excellent software support. Last month, HMD Global released the Nokia X7 in China—yet another notched mid-ranger with decent specifications. The Nokia X7 features a large 6.18-inch display with an iPhone X-style notch, Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC, 4GB RAM, and 64/128GB internal storage for the equivalent of about $245 in China. The Android One rebranding of this phone is allegedly nearing its launch internationally, as marketing renders of a purported Nokia 8.1 have appeared online.

Nokiapoweruser leaked marketing renders of the Nokia 8.1—a rebranded Nokia X7 for the rest of the world. The phone is code-named Phoenix and as you’d expect, it has nearly identical specifications compared to the Nokia X7. In addition to the specifications that I mentioned above, the smartphone also has a 3,4oo mAh battery, 12 and 13 MP dual cameras, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and microSD card support. Here are more leaked renders of the device, courtesy of Nokiapoweruser.

Nokiapoweruser states that the Nokia 8.1 will launch on December 5 in Dubai. It may also be accompanied by the long-awaited Nokia 9  penta-camera flagship as well as a lower-end Nokia 2.1, but there’s no confirmation on either device launching at the event. I see the Nokia 8.1 phone as yet another decent mid-range option which will satisfy those of you seeking a stock Android-like experience. Unfortunately, HMD Global still doesn’t let users unlock the bootloaders on all their devices, though they have opened up bootloader unlocking on the Nokia 8.

Spotify may be coming to India in early 2019

spotify india

India and China are two of the biggest emerging countries when it comes to technology. For years, tech companies only focused on markets like the United States and Europe, but both India and China have a higher population to target. As more people in these countries come online, we’re going to see an influx of technology companies attempt to gain customers there. Some have tried and already failed, while others (like Google) have been very aggressive in the area by not only making their current services more accessible but also launching entirely new services built specifically for these markets. The latest tech company to try to enter the Indian market seems to be Spotify as reports indicate they have plans to launch within the next 6 months.

There’s been a lot of activity under the roof of Spotify as of late. The music streaming service received integration into Google Maps, they now allow you to download 10,000 tracks per device, and they’re even testing a sleep timer for those who like to listen to podcasts after laying down for the night. Not only that, but those who use the Wear OS application recently received an update that brought a new user interface and support for Spotify Connect. That’s a lot of work on the software end but it seems the company is also looking to expand their user base as well.

It was less than three weeks ago when Spotify announced they were bringing their service to the Middle East and North Africa. However, it looks like their expansion plans aren’t stopping there as Variety is reporting the popular music streaming service is scheduled to launch in India “as soon as the next six months.” Again, it is difficult for a technology company to enter the Indian market due to price-sensitive customers and previous competition. However, Spotify feels they will have an advantage by offering an extended (more than 30 days) free trial period for the region.

The company will still have a tough road ahead as some of the biggest local record labels have yet to partner up with the company. Negotiations can take time though and with Spotify having around 6 months to get things under control, they could make a huge splash with their launch.

Google’s working on workspace support and tablet-view in Chrome OS

chrome os chromebook tablet

The Pixel Slate, which was announced last month, is finally available for purchase. There have been other Chrome OS devices that utilize the platforms “tablet mode” feature. However, many were hoping for things to get better with Google’s own Chrome OS tablet. Unfortunately, many have expressed the same complaints about the software which is attempting to accommodate both a laptop and a tablet form factor. Google is aware of some of Chrome OS’ biggest software shortcomings and we have learned that two heavily requested features are in the pipeline.

Chromebooks are popular among children and the school system due to their inexpensive price, but Google (and other OEMs) have been working on adding premium devices to the market. With this comes the desire to get Chromebooks in the enterprise market, but workspace support (virtual desktops) have yet to be added to Chrome OS. Kan Liu is the Senior Product Manager for Chrome OS and Android Police was able to speak to him about this missing feature. While he was not able to give an exact timeframe, he was able to confirm that they are aware that the feature is needed and it is “on the roadmap” for Chrome OS.

As more companies are set to release tablets running Chrome OS, the lack of a tablet-view feature in Chrome has left people annoyed to say the least. On larger screen devices there are responsive websites that just aren’t optimized for a touchscreen as an input device. Responsive websites are designed to deal with this by detecting the screen size of the device, but some websites aren’t detecting devices like Chrome OS tablets. This leads to small text, tough to tap links, and a UI that is just inconvenient for the device.

Again, Kan Liu has stepped in and said the Chrome OS team is aware of this and has confirmed that “in the upcoming release” they will be introducing a “request tablet site” feature in Chrome. We weren’t given a date as to when this feature would roll out to users but the use of the word “upcoming” makes it seem like it will be coming soon.
