Xiaomi is working on another smartphone with a 108MP camera, and it may come to India

Last year, we broke the news that Xiaomi is working on at least four smartphones with the then-newly launched 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor. These four phones came to us in the form of the Mi Mix Alpha (draco), Mi Note 10 Pro (tucana), Mi 10 (umi), and Mi 10 Pro (cmi). At that time, the names of these smartphones were not available — consequently, we also took an educated guess that none of those phones would be the Mi Mix 4 — and so far, this has held to be true, too. Now, we have some more new information: Xiaomi is working on at least two new smartphones within a product series — one with a 64MP primary camera, and the other with a 108MP primary camera.

Xiaomi Gauguin (64MP) and Xiaomi Gauguin Pro (108MP)

XDA Member kacskrz, who is our frequent and trusted Xiaomi tipster, and XDA Senior Member Deic have found multiple evidence within MIUI 12 of the existence of two upcoming smartphones from Xiaomi. The phones come under the “Gauguin” codename family, which indicates that they can be released under a singular marketing name (though this can change according to product strategy and placement across different regions). What is more likely to happen is that the phones could possibly share several key specifications.

One of the highlights of the devices will be their rear quad-camera setups. The standard “Gauguin” smartphone will have a 64MP primary camera, while the higher variant “Gauguin Pro” smartphone will have a 108MP primary camera. Leaker Digital Chat Station further corroborates this information, mentioning that both gauguin and apollo will follow the same pattern. We’ll talk more about apollo in another article.

Further, there are three regions marked for the gauguin family of smartphones: China, India, and Global — indicating that the phones will make their way to India and will be available in other international markets as well. The model number for gauguin is expected to end in J17, while gauguinpro will adopt a model number ending in J17Pro. Also, both the smartphones are expected to come with a Qualcomm SoC, unlike the recently uncovered Redmi K30 Ultra that is likely to come with a MediaTek SoC.

Speculation

The strings within MIUI 12 does have some errors and inconsistencies, which indicates its “work-in-progress” nature. Namely, the strings suggest that the Chinese variants of both gauguin and gauguinpro will have 108MP cameras, while the Global and Indian variants of both will have 64MP cameras — but we believe this is incorrect and merely a result of the code being a work-in-progress.

Leaker Digital Chat Station mentions that the broader specifications for China and international markets will differ, but we are unable to confirm or deny this at this stage.

We do not have any further information on the broader specifications of these devices, other than their camera setup. It also remains to be seen which exact sensors are adopted on the smartphone — whether these will be the same sensors as we have seen in the current generation, or if they will be newer, upgraded sensors. There is also no information on how the products will be placed in regions. While the product is being developed with an intention to sell it in the Indian market as well as the international market, the final decision still rests on Xiaomi.
