The Google Play Store is home to millions of apps and in order to help users find the right app, the company keeps introducing new features to either simplify the process or offer more useful information. For instance, the company added new download count and app size components to the search results earlier this year in March. Then, in an attempt to help users find apps easily, Google started testing new search filters for ratings earlier this month. Now, according to a recent report from Android Police, the company has started showing related gameplay videos from YouTube in Play Store listing to give users an idea of what to expect when they download a game.
The related gameplay videos appear under a new “Watch others play” section on popular game listings on the Play Store. As you can see in the attached screenshot, the recommended videos are sourced from YouTube and appear in a side-scrolling carousel within the new section.
As of now, it isn’t clear if the videos play directly within the Play Store or if they open up in the YouTube app and we weren’t able to test this since the feature wasn’t available on any of our devices. This leads us to believe that Google is currently testing the feature with a limited number of users and might roll it out to more users in the coming weeks. Additionally, as Android Police points out, the company might use this feature to cross-promote content from its YouTube Gaming partners onto the Play Store.
This isn’t the first time Google has tested cross-promoting one of its services on another one of its platforms. Just a few days ago, we learned that the YouTube app for Android was testing a new feature that showed Google Search results within the app when searching for videos on YouTube.
