Every year, Android enthusiasts wait for Google’s next model Android device that serves a template for other manufacturers to replicate or take inspiration from. Today, we’re seeing the fourth iteration to the Google Pixel series, and that sparks joy in our hearts even though we’d already learned most of the features beforehand. The Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL come with perceptible improvements to computational photography with new features like Astrophotography mode and Dual Exposure settings as well as a new 90Hz display, and more. Sadly for those in India, however, they will not be able to experience the new features since Google will not be launching the Pixel 4 series in India.
Here’s an official statement by a Google India spokesperson:
“Google has a wide range of products that we make available in different regions around the world. We determine availability based on a variety of factors, including local trends, and product features. We decided not to make Pixel 4 available in India. We remain committed to our current Pixel phones and look forward to bringing future Pixel devices to India.”
Based on the official statement, we can assume the reason behind the unavailability of the Pixel 4 duo in India could be linked to its poor sales in the country. While the more affordable Pixel 3a helped Google increase its sales by 88% in the U.S. with its $399 pricing, it failed to make a mark in India. This is because of the much higher price in India corresponding to roughly $570 at the time of the launch. At that price, Indians have much more attractive options including the OnePlus 7 and the newer OnePlus 7T, Redmi K20 Pro, and ASUS ROG Phone II to name a few.

For some background, we recently learned that Google’s Soli Motion Sense gestures on the Pixel 4/4XL are geo-restricted and limited to 53 countries. India does not make it to the list of countries where the motion gestures will be supported, but at the time of this finding, we did not take it as Google’s decision to drop India from its potential markets. As of now, we cannot say for sure if the same applies to other regions where Soli is not available, but we should know in the following days.
Meanwhile, the statement above does leave some hope for the launch of Pixel 3a successor in India, but we cannot be sure about that until its launch next year. If you still want the best Google smartphone available in India, you can enjoy a good deal on the Pixel 3 (₹45,999) and the Pixel 3 XL (₹47,999) in India with the ongoing festive sale on Flipkart which ends tomorrow.
