With the launch of the Xperia 5 early last month, Sony shifted focus to compact smartphones once again. While the Xperia 5 is just a smaller version of its flagship Xperia 1, the all-new Sony Xperia 8 targets a completely different price bracket. The device, which was recently unveiled in Japan, is one of the company’s first mid-range devices to include features like IP65/68 water and dust protection.
As reported by the XperiaBlog, the Sony Xperia 8 carries forward the same design language as the two flagships. It features a 6-inch FHD+ display with a tall 21:9 aspect ratio which is great for content consumption. What’s great is that both the display and the glass back feature Gorilla Glass 6. The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 630 chipset coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
In the camera department, the Xperia 8 packs in a dual-camera setup on the back with a 12MP f/1.8 primary lens and an 8MP f/2.4 secondary lens. While up on the front, the device houses a single 8MP selfie shooter. Additionally, the device includes a 2,760mAh battery, NFC support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
As per the official press release from the company, new Xperia 8 weighs in at 170 grams with dimensions of 69mm x 158 mm x 8.1mm, making it fairly compact. The phone is expected to go on sale later this month on Y!mobile and will be made available in four color options – white, black, orange, and blue. Upon its launch, the Xperia 8 will be the first Android device from the company to launch with Y!mobile and it’s expected to be priced around 54,000 yen (~$505).
Along with the device, Sony is also expected to launch a see-through flip cover which will also be made available in four colors – gray, black, orange, and blue. However, there’s no word from the company regarding its price. As of now, it isn’t clear whether Sony will bring the Xperia 8 to more markets. Although it seems quite unlikely, as it revealed plans to “defocus” on India, North America, South America, and other regions earlier this year. A comment can also be made on Sony’s current naming conventions, which appear to be all over the place.
