The Pixel 4 leaks have slowed down a bit recently, mostly because we know so much already. There’s nothing left to discover about the physical devices themselves, so we’ve moved more toward the software features. Recently, we’ve seen Google’s Recorder app, Live Captions, live wallpapers, and updated Pixel Launcher. Next up, we’re getting a closer look at Google Assistant, Motion Sense, and a cute game for the Pixel 4.
We’ve already seen glimpses of the updated Google Assistant on the Pixel 4. Newly discovered teaser videos give us an even better look at what Assistant will be able to do on the Pixel 4 series. Triggering the Assistant brings up a colorful bar across the bottom. The command and Assistant’s reply appear in text on top of a dark gradient over the top of whatever you were doing. The panel will results to your command then slides up from the bottom, but it doesn’t take up the entire display now.
We can also see Continued Conversation in action on the phone. This allows you to simply keep talking acter the initial command. Assistant looks to be smarter about knowing what’s happening on the screen, too. One video shows a person asking when a flight is while in a text conversation. After Google gives the answer, the person simply asks to text that info. No need to say who the recipient is because the conversation is already open.
The next Assistant video shows how it can access your content in apps. The person asks to see “photos from last weekend” and then asks to only see “photos with a dog.” Assistant brings up the photos from Google Photos and then only shows the ones with dogs. You can actually do this currently with Assistant, but it doesn’t work as smoothly.
We’ve heard a lot about Motion Sense and Project Soli already. Last week, it was revealed which countries would get the Pixel 4’s Soli gestures. Now, we’re getting a closer look at what Motion Sense will actually do, thanks again to leaked promo videos.
First up, silencing alarms and phone calls will require a simple swipe over the Pixel 4 with your hand in a vertical position. It’s likely that the direction you swipe will determine if you dismiss/snooze or ignore/answer. Similarly, swiping in the same fashion can skip tracks, as shown with YouTube Music. Again, the direction you swipe will make a difference. It appears the gestures themselves will be fairly simple, it just depends on which app you’re using.
The last bit of Soli news is a joint creation between Google and The Pokémon Company for the Pixel 4. The “game” is a way to teach people how to use the Soli/Motion Sense gestures. You play with 5 different Pokémon (Pikachu, Scorbunny, Sobble, Grookey, and Eevee). After completing the test, you can continue to play with one of them and learn more. 9to5Google speculates that this demo is a promotion for Pokémon Sword and Shield.
What do you think of these new features for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL? Are you anxious to get the updated Google Assistant on your phone? Do you think Motion Sense is cool?
