After having tough times selling smartphones, especially in highly competitive markets like India, Motorola has been hitting high notes with its Motorola One Series. This year’s releases under the Motorola One series have been centered around cameras, starting with the Motorola One Vision with a 48MP camera, the One Action (review) with a dedicated GoPro-like action camera feature followed by the One Zoom which features four cameras on the rear. Today, the company is launching the Motorola One Macro with a dedicated camera for macro photography along with mid-range specifications.
Motorola is using the approach of mastering one camera at a time instead of shoving all the sensors into a single device. As a result, the Motorola One Macro comes with a dedicated 2MP macro lens with autofocus, giving it an edge over the fixed-focus macro cameras on smartphones like the Realme 5 Pro/XT, the Honor 20, or the Redmi Note 8 Pro. The macro camera on the Motorola One Macro has a minimal focal range of 2cm which means you can get very close to the subject. The 2MP macro sensor has a pixel size of 1.75μm and is paired with an f/2.2 lens for well-lit macro shots. Besides macro photography, the also supports shooting macro videos at 720p.
Additionally, there is a 13MP primary camera and a 2MP depth sensor on the Motorola One Macro. To aid the depth sensor, there’s laser autofocus on the smartphone. On the front, the Motorola One Macro gets an 8MP camera. The AI on the smartphone not only helps optimize the colors based on the scene but also suggests fixes to the orientation and alignment issues via the Smart Composition feature. The Motorola Camera app also comes with features like Spot Color for popping out a single color, Cutout for adding a different background to a bokeh face shot, and Cinemagraph to create GIFs. Additionally, there’s an inbuilt leveler in the Camera UI.
The Motorola One Macro rocks a 6.2-inch HD+ display with a V-shaped notch. The smartphone is made out of polycarbonate but it comes with a reflective mirror-like surface under a transparent coating on the back. Internally, the build is reinforced by an aluminum frame to make it sturdier.
In terms of hardware, the Motorola One Macro uses a MediaTek Helio P70 octa-core chipset along with 4GB of RAM. In terms of storage, there’s 64GB storage onboard which can be expanded up to 512GB. This is the only configuration in which the One Macro is available. In terms of software, the smartphone runs stock Android Pie and Motorola guarantees that it will be updated to Android 10. Notably, despite the Motorola One branding, the smartphone is not affiliated with Google’s Android One program. We’re not sure of the reason behind this but we’ll learn more from either Motorola or Google in this respect. The only software customizations in the UI include support for traditional Moto Actions.
