5G was a super hot buzzword in late 2018/early 2019, but it has died down a bit recently. That doesn’t mean carriers have stopped going full-speed ahead with their network rollouts. However, a couple of notable recent Android devices have skipped out on 5G support. Google and OnePlus recently talked about why the Pixel 4 and OnePlus 7T series’ lack 5G.
There was actually a rumor that claimed Google was going to reveal a 5G Pixel 4 at the Made by Google event. It seemed unlikely and it ended up not being true. Google’s VP of product design, Brian Rakowski, talked about now is not the right time for a 5G device.
“It will get there, but now is not the right time to buy a 5G phone. Both from a deployment perspective—the coverage is not broadly available in enough places for enough users to benefit from it—[and] from a hardware and phone perspective—it’s still power-hungry [and] immature.”
He is correct about this. The 5G devices that have been released so far are not useful for the vast majority of people. Tech companies love to be “first” and right now that’s what the 5G battle is about. Google would have already been late to 5G, so there’s no need to jump in before it’s mature.

One company that did jump on board as quickly as they could is OnePlus. They released the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G in the UK, but didn’t follow it up with a 5G version of the OnePlus 7T Pro. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau recently explained why the company didn’t release another 5G device.
“It’s not related to a Pro series or T-series or another device that certainly must have 5G. It’s more looking at what are the circumstances and what’s a suitable opportunity to build a 5G device.”
Lau went on to say the OnePlus 7 Pro was about “pushing the boundaries” of tech and they did that in a number of ways. Features like the 90Hz screen made their way to the OnePlus 7T Pro, but 5G did not. That leads us to believe OnePlus doesn’t see 5G as a compelling enough feature as of this moment. Do you agree with Google and OnePlus?
