Last year, Xiaomi launched the Mi 8 Lite which was a stripped-down version of their flagship smartphone, the Mi 8. Powered by a Snapdragon 660 SoC, the Mi 8 Lite was targetted at users demanding a reliable performance and decent hardware for daily tasks at an affordable price. While Xiaomi’s flagship series was upgraded with the Mi 9‘s launch in February this year, we haven’t yet seen the Mi 9 Lite, the successor to the Mi 8 Lite. There has been a new development that hints the Mi 9 Lite may launch soon and in the meantime, Xiaomi’s off-shoot Redmi may also be preparing to launch the Redmi 8 and the Redmi 8A.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Lite just appeared on Google's list of certified Android devices. It's listed with the code-name pyxis and is a variant of the Mi CC9.

As per the updated list of certified Android devices on the Google Play Console spotted by our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, the Mi 9 Lite codenamed “pyxis” appears to be a variant of the Xiaomi Mi CC9. The Mi CC9 series was launched in China in July and comprises three devices – the CC9, the CC9e, and the CC9 Meitu Edition. While the standard and the Meitu Editions of the Mi CC9 vary only in terms of the camera software, the CC9e has been rebranded as the Mi A3, i.e. Xiaomi third Android One device, internationally.
There have been raging rumors about the Mi CC9 being rebadged as the ‘Pro’ variant of the Mi A3 but the company may instead launch the device with MIUI. Xiaomi has a long history of renaming phones before launching them in markets outside China, so much so that we, at XDA, prefer calling devices by their codenames instead of their marketed names. Besides the Mi CC9e, Xiaomi also rebadged the Redmi K20 and the K20 Pro (review) as the Mi 9T and the Mi 9T Pro, respectively.
At the same time, the Mi 9 Lite has also been certified by the Office of The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) of Thailand, leading to more convincing hints about the smartphone’s imminent launch.
Alongside the Mi 9 Lite, Thailand’s NBTC has also certified the Redmi 8 and the Redmi 8A, which are successors to the Redmi 7 and the Redmi 7A (review), respectively. In an event last month, Redmi announced furthered its denotative sequence with the unveiling of the Redmi Note 8 series. While we do not have much information about the Redmi 8A, the Redmi 8 supposedly passed through China’s regulatory body, TENAA, last month. As per the certification, the Redmi 8 comes with an unknown 2GHz octa-core processor, RAM options up to 4GB and storage options up to 64GB. The device is expected to come with an HD+ display and dual cameras on the back.
We may not see the two devices launching together since there was a gap of two months between the launches of the Redmi 7A and the Redmi 7 but we hope to learn more over the coming few days.
