OnePlus announced the OnePlus 7T today in both the U.S. and India, with a European launch date set for October 10th. The new OnePlus smartphone is cheaper than the OnePlus 7 Pro and is expected to compete with the non-XL Pixel 4 from Google. Like the upcoming Pixel 4, the 7T has a 90Hz AMOLED display, but it has another camera (a wide-angle lens), more RAM (2GB more), faster charging (Warp Charge 30T), and the newer Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus. Of course, the spec sheet doesn’t tell the whole story, especially when it comes to the user experience. The spec sheet doesn’t even necessarily list every detail about a new device, which is why we put together a summary of some of the smaller details and questions you might want to know about among all the OnePlus 7T news today.
OnePlus 7T Software
Will the OnePlus 7T support desktop mode in Android 10?
A little-known feature in Android 10 is native support for a desktop mode. What Google has done is added support for launching a special version of the stock launcher when connected to a secondary display. Google is also encouraging developers to optimize their apps for secondary displays. While the OnePlus 7T (and the OnePlus 7 Pro) supports desktop mode in that it’s possible to mirror the display via a DisplayPort adapter, OxygenOS 10 doesn’t provide its own desktop interface. Thus, desktop mode support is there in principle, but its functionality leaves a lot to be desired.
How many updates will the phone get?
The OnePlus 7T launches with OxygenOS 10 based on Android 10 and comes with Google apps and services. Looking at OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule, the OnePlus 7T will receive at least 2 years of major Android OS updates and 3 years of security patch updates. Stable updates roll out once every 2 months, while beta updates once every few weeks. There will, of course, be support from the custom developer community on our forums.
OnePlus 7T Cameras
How do the triple cameras compare to the OnePlus 7 Pro?
Visually, the designs of the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T couldn’t be more distinct. In the featured image, you can see the OnePlus 7T with its circular camera bump housing the three cameras. Below, you can see the OnePlus 7 Pro with its vertically aligned triple camera setup.
Apart from the design, however, the cameras are very similar. Here’s a detailed summary of the cameras for the two smartphones:
- OnePlus 7 Pro

As you can see, the front-facing camera, 48MP primary rear camera, and the 16MP ultra wide-angle camera are the same between the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T. However, the pictures taken by the 7T will likely look better than the pictures taken by the 7 Pro on launch day, since OnePlus has refined its image tuning in the months since the 7 Pro’s launch. The 7T, however, has 2x optical zoom versus 2.2x on the OnePlus 7 Pro, and the 7T also lacks OIS for the telephoto lens. The 7T, however, will be getting 720p@960 slow-motion and 4k@30 wide-angle video recording via a post-launch update. We reached out to OnePlus to confirm if these features will be available for the OnePlus 7 Pro in a future update, and we’ll let you know once we get a clear answer.
Two new camera features that you may have seen during the launch announcement are Super Stable mode and Macro mode. Both of these features are already available on the OnePlus 7 Pro with the OnePlus Camera app that ships with the OxygenOS 10 update. The first one reduces unwanted bumps, shakes, and jolts while you’re holding the phone in your hand; videos are recorded at up to 1080p resolution through the wide-angle lens. The latter lets you take close-up shots of subjects that are 2.5cm-8cm away; with no dedicated macro lens on the 7T, the feature uses auto-focus on the wide-angle lens.

Are there any changes to Nightscape?
OnePlus introduced Nightscape on the OnePlus 6T to allow users to take better low-light photography. The algorithm has been tweaked over time, but the biggest change is that you’ll be able to use Nightscape with the wide-angle lens on the OnePlus 7T. This wasn’t supported at launch on the OnePlus 7 Pro, but it was added in a later update. You can’t capture a Nightscape using the telephoto lens yet, though.
Can you record videos using the telephoto or wide-angle camera?
Yes, this is supported. In fact, you can shoot interchangeably between all three lenses. This is an enhancement over the OnePlus 7 Pro.
Display
How bright does the display get? Are there any other notable display changes?
The OnePlus 7 Pro reaches a peak brightness level of 600 nits when using auto-brightness, though in our display review we measured a peak level of about 570 nits. OnePlus says the OnePlus 7T reaches a brightness of up to 1,000 nits under direct sunlight. The display is also HDR10+ certified, though services like Netflix have their own device certification processes. Interestingly, Reading Mode now supports showing “full-color content” by “[optimizing] saturation, gamut, and [the] contrast ratio.” You’ll be able to pick between a monochromatic (grayscale) filter or the new chromatic filter.
The device has also received TÜV Rheinland’s “Eye Comfort” certification, and OnePlus says that the phone’s new “internal luminescent material” blocks 40% of blue light projection to reduce eye strain at night.
Does the phone support a variable refresh rate?
OnePlus says the 7 Pro and 7T supports a variable refresh rate that automatically changes to 60Hz when watching videos, using the camera app, or during phone calls. More specifically, apps that use a SurfaceView, TextureView, or NativeActivity force the phone to run at 60Hz. It may be possible to force the 7T to run at 90Hz like the 7 Pro, but we haven’t confirmed that yet.
What games support the OnePlus 7T’s high refresh rate?
According to ASUS, over 120 Android games can run at over 60fps. That list isn’t comprehensive, but it’s the best list we have so far.
Has the in-display fingerprint scanner been improved?
Yes, OnePlus says they tuned the in-display fingerprint scanner used on the 7T to improve recognition. They’re using the latest generation optical sensor from Goodix. The sensor on the 7 Pro was said to be as fast as a physical capacitive scanner, so the sensor on the 7T is at least as good if not better.
Charging
How did they make the charging on the OnePlus 7T faster than on the OnePlus 7 Pro?
The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition introduced Warp Charge 30, which was later adopted by the OnePlus 7 Pro. Warp Charge 30 delivers 6A at 5V to achieve 30W fast wired charging, making it possible to charge the 4,000mAh battery of the OnePlus 7 Pro from 0-50% in 20 minutes of from 0-100% in just under an hour. In comparison, Warp Charge 30T charges the 3,800mAh battery of the OnePlus 7T at 23% faster speeds. This is despite the fact that Warp Charge 30T still charges at 6A/5V for 30W and is compatible with the Warp Charge 30 brick and cable from the OnePlus 7 Pro. The reason it’s faster, however, is because OnePlus reduced the resistance of the charging chip in the phone.
Warp Charge 30T on the OnePlus 7T keeps your phone cool while you’re using it.
Does the phone support USB Power Delivery?
Yes, but only 5V/3A (15W) charging. The 7T supports USB 3.1 Type-C Power. You can also still use your old Dash Charge cables for 20W charging.
Does the OnePlus 7T support wireless charging?
No, there’s no wireless charging on the 7T or any other OnePlus phone for that matter.
Audio
Does the OnePlus 7T have dual speakers?
Yes, it has dual stereo speakers like the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. The audio is enhanced by Dolby Atmos on the 7T rather than Dirac on the 6T.
On the OnePlus 7T, the two speakers are located in the top bezel and bottom-right edge.
Does the phone come with a 3.5mm headphone jack to USB Type-C adapter?
No. The OnePlus 6T shipped with a dongle, but since then, OnePlus has not included a dongle. If you do have an adapter already, the phone supports audio passthrough, meaning it uses its own DAC when connecting an audio accessory.
Protection
What kind of glass protection does it offer, and is there an IP rating?
The back glass is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 5. OnePlus says the 7T has a “smooth matte surface with a brilliant metallic radiance.” Both the Glacier Blue and Frosted Silver colors look great in renders, so hopefully, the Gorilla Glass 5 layer will protect the phone from minor falls and dings.
Like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the OnePlus 7T does not have an IP rating. That doesn’t mean the phone has no resistance to water or dust, but the lack of an IP rating means you can’t be sure how much water or particles the phone can handle before it gets damaged. Your phone should be fine if a small amount of water is splashed on the phone or if it’s briefly submerged, but there’s no guarantee. Besides, water damage isn’t covered by warranty, which is the case for all major smartphone brands, even those that advertise IP ratings on their devices.
Connectivity
Can you use the phone on Verizon?
Yes, like the OnePlus 6T and OnePlus 7 Pro, you can use the (unlocked) OnePlus 7T on Verizon’s LTE network. Just make sure you call Verizon and tell them you want “CDMA-less provisioning.” Without that, you’ll have problems with text messages.
Does the 7T support dual SIMs?
Yes, but not on the T-Mobile model.
