Since Motorola was acquired by Lenovo from Google, the company has had a lot of highs and lows. The company has gotten a lot worse in certain regards they used to be good with, such as updates, but their hardware team was also switched entirely. Whereas in the Google days the Moto X was the flagship phone of choice, it has since been almost completely retired with the Moto X line not having seen a release since 2017. In its former place is now the Moto Z line, and now one of those devices, the Moto Z4, has its kernel source code available.
The Moto Z line supports proprietary Moto Mods, which allow users to snap mods into the back of the phone and easily add additional functionality on it, allowing for endless possibility. The latest iteration in the Moto Z line was the Moto Z4, launched earlier this year and featuring things like a full-screen display with a notch and a multiple camera array, all while supporting the same set of mods and maintaining the same overall form factor.
If you have a Moto Z4 and you were looking into modding it and playing around with it, then look no more: Motorola has released the kernel source code for the device. This allows developers to play around with it and put together things like custom recoveries, ROMs, and custom kernels. If you’re a developer and you were looking into kernel sources for the device, then go to Motorola’s GitHub and check them out. If you’re a user, then be on the lookout in our forums for custom kernels and ROMs coming to your device soon.
